How to Get Your Deck Ready for the Season

Your deck offers a space to spend time outdoors, entertain friends and family, or simply relax. However, decks also require some regular maintenance, especially after the harsh winter months. Don’t worry–a quick inspection, a cleaning, and a new coat of paint are all it usually takes. If your deck needs repairs or you want to make some upgrades, then spring is the best time to tackle these projects as well.

Inspection

The first step to getting your deck back in shape is to perform a visual inspection for any signs of damage. Check the entire structure, including the underdeck and the railing. Regular wear and tear, weather conditions, and the weight of heavy snow can cause nails and other connections to come loose. You should especially keep your eye out for signs of rot, which can make your deck unsafe to walk on. Rotted wood has a spongy, discoloured, and flaky look.

Cleaning

Next, you’ll want to get your deck cleaned up and ready for use. Remove any furniture and use a leaf blower (or a good old-fashioned broom) to clear it of leaves or other debris. A pressure washer is also an effective tool for cleaning a deck quickly, just make sure you use a low setting or a fan tip to avoid damaging your deck’s wood fibres. Finally, use a wood cleaner to remove stains and spots of mildew and get your deck looking like new again!

Protection

Keep your deck in tip-top shape by adding a new coat of stain and sealant once you are done cleaning. The stain will help refresh the colour while the sealant will protect your deck from harsh UV rays and other elements. Depending on where your deck is situated, you won’t necessarily have to repeat this step every year. A deck that sits directly in the sun, for example, will deteriorate faster than one in the shade. A good general rule of thumb is to apply a new coat of sealant at least every three years.

Repairs

If your initial inspection turned up problem areas that need to be fixed, then make sure you get repairs done before you start using your deck. For larger jobs, you may need to hire a professional. If you have some DIY skills and know-how, then you might be able to perform some smaller tasks yourself. Just make sure you use suitable and high-quality materials, like corrosion-resistant screws, so that your repairs hold up for a long time to come.

Upgrades

After your deck has been cleaned, sealed, and repaired, it’s a great time to tackle some upgrades that will make it an even more enjoyable spot. Consider adding a pergola, a patio umbrella, or screens to increase shade and privacy. Maybe it is also time for some new patio furniture and accessories, like chairs and cushions that allow you and your guests to sit comfortably. Planters and hanging baskets can help the space feel more relaxing and inviting as well.

With a bit of TLC, your deck will be ready for grilling, entertaining, and sunbathing in no time. It’s a great property feature to have, so make the most of it by getting it into shape for the season.
