Car Travel Essentials
How to Pack for a Road Trip

Packing for a road trip is all about making sure you stay comfortable and have everything you need for the journey. Being well-prepared will help ensure a good time with friends and family, as well as that everyone gets along on the way! Here are some of the top packing tips and essentials to keep in mind before you hit the road.

Duffel Bags

Traveling by car means you don’t have to worry about plane baggage allowances, but space is still at a premium. Make the most of it by packing your belongings in duffle bags rather than a hard-sided suitcase. Duffle bags are easier to stack and squeeze into place. Plus, they are easier to grab when unloading.

Snacks and Drinks

Another reason to use duffle bags is so that your trunk has room for a cooler. Fill it with foods that are easy to grab and eat, like fruits and vegetables cut into bite-sized pieces. Make sure you also bring non-perishable snacks like granola bars. A large water jug and reusable water bottles to help you stay hydrated are also a must.

Comfortable Clothing

There’s no need to dress your best for a road tip–aim for comfort above all, as you will be spending long hours sitting in the vehicle. Choose clothes that are soft, stretchy, and breathable and outfits that are simple and versatile enough to go from the car to your various pit stops. You can always pack a change of clothing for activities that require more specific attire.

Navigation Tools

Before setting off, ensure that you have all of the navigation tools you will need for the trip. While your smartphone will likely get the job done, remember that, depending on where you go, you might not always have service. Download your routes ahead of time and always have a backup paper map just in case.

Cleaning Essentials

Keep the cabin comfortable while you travel by having some tidying essentials on hand. This may include hand sanitizer, pre-moistened wipes, trash bags, air freshener, and anything else you need to maintain a fresh and comfortable space.

Emergency Kit

Your vehicle should always have an emergency kit in the trunk, but it’s especially important when traveling far from home. It should include a flashlight, a first aid kit, a blanket, jumper cables, and anything else you may need in case the car breaks down.

Chargers

Keeping your devices powered up while on the road means you can use them for navigation, communication, and entertainment. Pick up some car chargers and portable power banks so that you always have power when you need it.

Entertainment

Speaking of entertainment, think about what you want to do for those long hours on the road. Music playlists, podcasts, and audiobooks are all excellent options. Make sure you download everything in advance so that you don’t have to stream and are able to listen even when you don’t have service.

Enjoy your next road trip to the fullest by packing correctly and bringing what you need to make the journey a success. Keep the tips above in mind as you pack your bags and get your vehicle ready.
