Work-Life Juggling
Finding Balance When Working from Home

Over the past year, many people have had to adjust to working from home, and many are still struggling to find a new work-life balance under these circumstances. Though remote work offers greater flexibility, it can also be a lot harder to unplug, step away from the office, and get out of work mode. You might find yourself working longer hours or having your work intrude on personal time.

If you’re finding your work-life management to be more of a juggling act than a balance, then here are six strategies to try.

1. Set a schedule that works for you

When you work from home, you might feel like you need to be available all the time. However, it is best to set “office hours” that are conducive to your schedule and that make it easy to coordinate with your team. Outside of those hours, you shouldn’t feel obligated to attend to work tasks and demands. This will make it easier to plan the personal parts of your day.

2. Make after-work plans and stick to them

If you have trouble clocking out of work when you are supposed to, then try to have some solid plans in place for after-work hours. This is especially important if your workspace is in your living space. The plans can be as simple as running some errands or having dinner with your family, as long as you stick to them.

3. Get some daily exercise

Exercise is important to work-life balance in any context. Not only does it help you stay healthy, but it can provide a lynchpin for your daily routine and ensure that you step away from work when you mean to. Though going to the gym might not be an option right now, you can always take a walk, go on a run, pick up cycling, or lift weights at home.

4. Take a proper lunch break

When working from home, it is tempting to snack throughout the day or take your meals at your desk. Try to start taking a proper lunch away from the computer with a full and balanced meal. You’ll get to enjoy a much-needed mid-day breather and take better care of your health and nutrition at the same time.

5. Don’t skip socializing

One of the hardest things about working from home can be feelings of isolation and loneliness. It severely limits your casual daily interactions at a time when you also might be missing your closer friends and family. Look for ways to keep in touch with others, like texting or video chat. Even holding regular meetings with your co-workers can help.

6. Try to use different devices for work

If it is possible for you to have different devices for work and personal use, then consider doing so. This will help stop you from getting distracted by work emails and make it easier to wait until the next day to tackle a work task that comes to mind when you are trying to relax.

Like any type of work, remote work comes with its own difficulties but also its own advantages. By setting clear boundaries between work and personal time, you can maximize the benefits and minimize the drawbacks of working from home.
