Winter Hiking
Essential Gear to Bring on Your Adventure

You don’t have to stop going out on your favourite hiking trails just because the snow and freezing temperatures have arrived. If you come properly prepared, even a cold and snowy winter hike can be a fun one. From clothing to specialized equipment, here is a quick guide to some of the essential gear that you should bring along with you.

Clothing Layers

The key to winter hiking success is to dress in layers. Layered clothing helps you maintain warmth and regulate your body temperature, as you can add or remove layers as needed. There are three essential layers. The first, a base layer, should be made of moisture-wicking materials like synthetic fabric or merino wool. The middle layer, an insulation layer, should be a fleece or a light puffy jacket. The outer layer should be a waterproof shell that can protect you from wind and rain.

Socks and Boots

A good pair of boots and a warm pair of socks are crucial for keeping your feet warm and comfortable during winter hiking. Merino wool is a great choice for socks, and the boots should be warm, strong, and waterproof but also lightweight to help prevent fatigue.

Accessories

On a chilly day, don’t forget other accessories like a fleece or wool hat, a scarf or a gaiter, and a pair of gloves or mittens. When temperatures are particularly cold, it is a good idea to wear an inner glove liner and an extra-insulating mitten on top.

Daypack

A winter hike generally requires more gear than a summer one, so you need the right daypack to carry it all. A lightweight pack is important as you will already be carrying the weight of the extra gear, and compression straps can help keep it all tucked away. You’ll also want a bag with plenty of loops and harnesses to keep crucial equipment accessible.

Insulated Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is a golden rule of hiking at any time of year. It might not be hot, but you will still be exerting yourself and perspiring. You’ll also be losing moisture through your breath. To keep your precious water from freezing, bring along a high-quality, insulated water bottle.

Sunglasses

The winter sun is still plenty strong, and all of the snow on the ground can create a great deal of glare while you are hiking. A pair of polarized sunglasses will protect your eyes and make it much easier to see the trail properly.

Headlamp

While it is not advisable to hike after dark, you should have a headlamp in your pack in case you don’t make it back from the trail by sundown. Headlamps allow for hands-free operation and light your way so that you can be confident where you step in the icy conditions.

Bear Spray

Bears don’t necessarily hibernate and stay confined to their dens all winter long, which means that winter encounters can still occur. Make sure you have bear spray and that you keep it in an accessible location. Remember that bear spray can also be used on cougars.

Don’t let winter slow you down–as long as you come properly prepared, you can still enjoy a fun day out on the trail with friends and family. Just make sure you bring the right gear to tackle the temperatures and conditions, and you’ll be all set to go.
