More than ten thousand people were evacuated when forest fires threatened their homes in British Columbia. Communities across the province were evacuated as firefighters battled the blazes around the clock and strong winds continued to fuel the fires.

Olympic Highlights
Best Canadian Moments from Tokyo 2020

Canadian athletes took home 24 medals (seven gold, six silver, and 11 bronze) from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics–the most at any non-boycotted Summer Olympic Games. While each and every medal was hard-earned and well deserved, there were some stories from these Games that truly stand out. Let’s take a look back at five of the biggest Canadian moments from Tokyo 2020.

Soccer Stars

Perhaps no Olympic story captured Canada’s attention more than our women’s soccer team changing the colour of their medal from Rio 2016 from bronze to gold, led by legendary captain Cristine Sinclair and head coach Bev Priestman. It all began with a historic 1-0 win against the United States team to get into the final, followed by a win against the evenly matched Swedish Team. The game ended in a shootout, where goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe and final shooter Julia Grosso came through.

Decathlon Domination

The decathlon showcases unparalleled athletic versatility, and no athlete displayed that better at these Olympics than Canadian Damian Warner. Warner, who previously won the bronze medal in Rio, came back to Tokyo 2020 to win the gold. At the same time, Warner also became only the fourth man in history to amass more than 9,000 points. He was also the first Canadian to ever win the event since its Olympic introduction in 1912.

Sprinting to the Podium

Canada hasn’t been on the top of a sprinting podium since Donovan Bailey’s win in the 100 m at Atlanta 1996. Andre De Grasse put Canada back on the map with not only a gold medal at the 200 m distance but a bronze in the 100 m and a bronze in the 4 x 100 m relay. The 26-year-old sprinter has already cemented his place in Canadian Olympic history, and he isn’t done yet.

Gold in the Pool

It was only the third day of Olympic competition when Maggie Mac Neil got in the pool and swam the perfect race to a gold in the 100 m butterfly. Mac Neil was seventh upon touching the wall at 50 m and motored her way to the win. The 21-year-old had previously become the world champion in the event in 2019 and masterfully followed up the achievement. She later helped the relay team capture bronze in the 4 x 100 m medley.

Olympic Powerhouse

The Canadian story of Tokyo 2020 isn’t complete without noting the achievements of 21-year-old Penny Oleksiak. The speedy swimmer captured three more medals at Tokyo 2020–two bronze in the 200 m freestyle and the 4×100 m medley and a silver in the 4×100 m freestyle. This pushed her medal total to seven and made Oleksiak the all-time most decorated Canadian Olympic Athlete.

It’s safe to say that Canadian athletes truly delivered at these Summer Games, giving us a number of moments to be proud of and look back on fondly. There’s also certainly a lot more to look forward to at Paris 2024.
