Nissan Safety Technology
Maxima and Altima rated top performers (+video)

Nissan believes meaningful technology should not be limited to luxury models and is working diligently to offer features like Intelligent Emergency Braking (IEB) with Pedestrian Detection across its lineup.

“The well-being of those inside our cars is just as important as the well-being of those outside our vehicles,” said Rob Warren, director, and chief marketing manager, Nissan North America. “IEB with Pedestrian Detection is announced as standard or available on 10 Nissan vehicles for the 2020 model year, and we’re working on expanding the technology further as quickly as possible.”

IEB with Pedestrian Detection is standard on the Nissan Maxima for 2020, helping Maxima join just one other non-luxury model earning a superior rating. Not far behind among midsize cars, the Nissan Altima is rated among the advanced vehicles in its class.

MAXIMA

Under the hood of the 2020 Maxima lies Nissan’s legendary VQ V6 engine. From sodium-filled exhaust valves and anodized pistons to the high-flow tuned induction system, more than 60% of the engine’s components have been re-designed for the Maxima®. It even borrows some performance technology from the mighty GT-R®. This 300-hp powerhouse exhilarates from idle to redline.

There’s no better way to describe it; the perfect execution of driving function with elegance and style. The quality of materials. The ideal placement of controls. The arm-length-long list of luxuries you expect – and a few you hadn’t even thought of. It’s clear that a great deal of time was spent so that every moment in the new Maxima® feels special.

ALTIMA

Sedans don’t have to be tame. They should awaken something inside of you. Altima’s new exciting and forward-thinking design blows past the mundane. Deep, cutting lines flow from front to back, blending seamlessly into the new muscular hood. Altima® is looking better than ever.

Imagine a sedan that has the kind of all-weather capability you usually expect from an SUV. Altima® is Nissan’s first sedan with a standard Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system. Combine that with all-new steering and suspension and Altima’s powerful but fuel-efficient 2.5-litre DIG engine, and you’ll revel in a thrilling and commanding ride.

The IIHS evaluation consists of three tests each at two speeds, resulting in six possible outcomes. The Maxima was the only tested vehicle to altogether avoid the obstacle in all six performed tests.

“Carmakers often roll out these kinds of advanced systems in more expensive luxury lines or as expensive options, so the superior performance of the standard systems on the more mainstream Maxima is noteworthy,” said IIHS President David Harkey.

Nissan”s IEB with Pedestrian Detection uses a combination of radar and camera-based technology to track nearby vehicles and approaching pedestrians. If a pedestrian is detected, visual and audible alerts are accompanied by automatic braking, helping to eliminate or significantly reduce the severity of an impact.

IIHS launched its pedestrian rating earlier this year, testing 11 luxury and non-luxury small SUVs in pedestrian crash prevention. In that test, the 2019 Nissan Rogue received an advanced rating. For the 2020 model year, Nissan Safety Shield 360 – which includes IEB with Pedestrian Detection – is standard on SV and SL Platinum trims, the Nissan Rogue”s most popular models.
