New Series Spotlight
Winners of the 2019 Fall TV Season

Fall 2019 brought us a host of new shows with great ratings and reviews, which means they are likely to stick around for a while and are worth getting invested in. Here are six new shows that have deservedly captured the attention of audiences and critics alike.

1. Watchmen (HBO)
A gritty reimagining of the graphic novel by the same name, Watchmen is a modern-day sequel that deals heavily with current social and political issues. This long-anticipated series was created by Damon Lindel of (co-creator of Lost and The Leftovers) and stars Oscar-and Emmy-winning actress Regina King. The acting, directing, writing, cinematography, and all-around high production quality serve to make Watchmen the season’s can’t-miss show.

2. Emergence (ABC)
The Lost of this year’s fall TV season, Emergence is showing viewers that it has plenty to offer in its own right. It is centred on a young girl with no memories who is discovered near the site of a strange accident and who is taken in by the police chief (played by the talented Allison Tolman). This show is a great pick for viewers who love a good, character-driven mystery.

3. Evil (CBS)
Evil follows the unlikely pairing of a skeptical psychologist and a Catholic priest as they work to solve some of the Church’s unexplained mysteries. The pair investigates purported hauntings, demonic possessions, and even miracles to determine whether there is a logical explanation for the events. A look at the lines between religion and science, as well as at where the two mix, Evil is a smart and thoughtful show that will have you hooked.

4. Raising Dion (Netflix)
Not your typical superhero story, Raising Dion is told from the perspective of a single mother, Nicole, who is trying to raise her son alone following the death of her husband. When the young boy begins manifesting extraordinary powers, she must protect him from people who would exploit him. At the same time, she attempts to look both into the origins of his powers and into her husband’s death.

5. Modern Love (Amazon Prime Video)
Looking for a little something more light-hearted? Modern Love is an anthology series based on the popular New York Times column and podcast. Each episode brings to life a unique story about love in all its forms, from romantic love to the love between friends and family. The star-studded cast includes Dev Patel, John Slattery, Anne Hathaway, Julia Garner, Catherine Keener, Tina Fey, Andrew Scott, and Shea Whigham.

6. Stumptown (ABC)
The darling of this season’s network television offerings, Stumptown follows private investigator and army veteran Dex Parios (Cobie Smulders) as she goes about her work in Portland, Oregon. The show’s genre can best be described as scruff-noir, offering a good mix of action and adventure with heavier emotional undertones. It’s a fun and engaging romp that will also make you think and feel.

Though streaming services are blurring the lines of the traditional fall TV season, it’s still a time when many fantastic new shows are being released. If you’re looking for something to watch, you should definitely give one of these six shows a try.
