Canadian Podcasts You Should Be Listening To

Podcasts are more popular than ever, and Canada’s many talented podcast creators make up an important part of the podcast scene. They definitely deserve a spot in your daily or weekly podcast rotation.

Whether you like to listen to podcasts on the way to work or while you wind down for the night, there are likely some Canadian shows perfect for your listening habits. Here are five Canadian podcasts that you should be checking out.

1) CBC News: The World This Hour

The World This Hour is a CBC podcast that brings you a Canadian perspective on world news every hour of every day. Different members of the trusted CBC news team anchor the podcast at different times of day to bring you up-to-the-minute news. The World This Hour gives you a real sense of how the world is changing around you.

2) CANADALAND

For more of an anti-establishment perspective on world and local news, take a listen to the CANADALAND network podcasts. CANADALAND focuses mainly on media reporting and mainstream media criticism. The main show airs every Monday, while a Short Cuts program every Thursday goes over the week’s media coverage. Every second Tuesday you can also tune into COMMONS, billed as a “political show for political outsiders.”

3) Stop Podcasting Yourself

One of the most popular podcasts in Vancouver, Stop Podcasting Yourself is at over 500 episodes and climbing. The show’s creators, Graham Clark and Dave Shumka, are both comedians, and their humorous conversations with each other and with guests are endlessly entertaining. Stop Podcasting Yourself essentially aims to capture just how funny comedians can be when not performing on stage.

4) Can’t Lit

Can’t Lit is a weird and wonderful fusion of witty and well-informed discussions of Canadian literature and light pop culture talk. Co-hosts Daniel Zomparelli and Dina Del Bucchia speak to an eclectic array of Canadian writers and poets, helping to connect these authors to their audiences. It is a podcast about books but also about anything and everything that can be considered entertaining.

5) The Awesome Hour

Broadcasting out of Edmonton, Alberta, The Awesome Hour is another entertaining mix of all things pop culture that also provides listeners with some great tunes and strange news. Hosts Alex, Ivan, and Corbo are all about having a good time and saying what you can’t or won’t. The Awesome Hour was rated the #1 podcast in Vue Weekly’s best of.

6) Taggart & Torrens

In 2014, former Our Lady Peace drummer Jeremy Taggart and Jonathan Torrens of Trailer Park Boys and Jonovision teamed up to broadcast their uniquely Canadian everyday conversations. The two loveable hosts explore a variety of topics ranging from sports to politics. In 2017, their podcast even spawned a book called Canadianity: Tales From The True North Strong And Freezing.

Podcasts provide an opportunity to listen to a diverse array of voices, both from around the world and from right here at home. Listening to some Canadian podcasts is a great way to stay connected with the national news and culture and to support your fellow Canadians as well.
