Perfect Winter Pastime
How to Get Started with Cross-Country Skiing

If you’re looking for a fun physical activity to try this winter, then cross-country skiing might be a great option for you. It’s also an excellent pastime that you can do while following pandemic restrictions, as it takes place outdoors and can easily be done solo or in a small group. Here’s a quick guide for those who are interested in taking up cross-country skiing and are wondering where to start.

What is Cross-Country Skiing?

Classic cross-country skiing involves gliding on your skis in a straight-line stride, usually in pre-set ski tracks in the snow. After initially kicking into your bindings to get moving, you settle into a stride much like the walking motion. You also typically hold a pole in each hand, which you drive into the ground to increase forward motion. Cross-country skiing can be done just about anywhere, including city parks, provincial parks, and national parks.

Cross-Country Skiing Equipment

One of the best things about cross-country skiing is that the equipment required is relatively simple. Once you get geared up with the following essentials, you’ll be all set to go.

Skis
Of course, you can’t start skiing without a pair of skis. Make sure you consult the ski size chart before making your purchase, as the correct size will be based on your height and weight.

Ski Boots
Cross-country ski boots should be compatible with your skis and should feel comfortable and flexible on your feet so that you can kick to start and stride with ease.

Ski Poles
To find the proper ski pole size, take your height and minus 30 centimetres from it. This should ensure that your ski poles are at about even with your armpits.

Clothing
As with most winter activities, the key to dressing for cross-country skiing is to wear layers. Be prepared for cold conditions, but be ready to generate heat as you move as well. Make sure you also have accessories like a hat, gloves and a scarf.

Cross-Country Skiing Tips

When you’re all ready to get out and start exploring, here are some tips to help ensure a good time on the cross-country skiing trails.

Go at Your Own Pace
When you start cross-country skiing, focus more on having fun than on pushing it for the sake of exercise. Whether you go alone or with some friends or loved ones, take some time to enjoy the experience of being in the great outdoors.

Finding Skiing Trails
There are thousands of easily accessible and well-groomed cross-country skiing trails all across the country. You can find them simply by searching online, checking park websites, or even asking some of your outdoorsy friends.

The Right of Way
On one-way trails, you must ski in the correct direction. On two-way trails, the rule is that uphill skiers should yield to downhills skiers and that you should move aside for faster skiers who are overtaking you.

Preserve the Tracks
When on the trail, do your best to preserve the ski tracks if you have to walk or if you fall so that skiers who come after you can have the same smooth skiing experience.

There’s a lot to love about cross-country skiing, so there’s no reason to wait to begin. Pick up the right gear, find a trail, and enjoy some time outside.
