High-Tech Slumber
5 Gadgets to Help with Better Sleep

Getting good sleep is important for your health, but it can be hard to come by. Thankfully, there are some devices and gadgets that may make it a little easier to get some shuteye.

Sleeping isn’t usually thought of as a high-tech activity, but there’s no reason why the tech we use to optimize other aspects of our lives can’t be used to help achieve better sleep as well. Whether you have trouble sleeping because of a noisy environment or you just can’t get your mind to quiet down when it’s time for bed, these five tech tools may be able to help improve your sleep quality and duration.

1. Sleep Trackers

If you often still feel tired after waking up, then one of today’s many, feature-full sleep trackers might provide you with valuable information for getting better quality sleep. Some fitness tracking devices have sleep tracking as a secondary feature, but there are also dedicated sleep tracking products that keep track of metrics like your sleep duration, respiration, heart rate, and more throughout the night. You might gain some useful insight as to why you don’t feel as rested as you should be.

2. Smart Alarm Clocks

A significant upgrade on the basic beeping alarm clocks of yesteryear, today’s high-tech alarm clocks come with many functions to improve your sleep. A sunrise alarm clock, for example, mimics a gradual sunrise before waking you up, which helps to shut down melatonin production. Gentle wake-up sounds of specifically composed tones and tempos guide you out of sleep as well. Some alarm clocks also mimic a sunset to encourage a sleepier state of mind when you lay down for the night.

3. White Noise Machines

Random and sudden noises are highly intrusive to sleep, but white noise can actually help encourage it. White noise machines produce a consistent sound that can lull you to sleep and keep you from waking up to intrusive sounds like cars driving by, dogs barking, chirping birds, or distant sirens. You’ll fall asleep easier and enjoy a more solid and sustained sleep as well.

4. Smart Light Bulbs

Spending time under bright lights right up until you go to bed can be one of the reasons you have trouble falling asleep. A simple solution could be to replace your standard light bulbs with today’s new smart light bulbs, which you can pair with a smart device. This gives you the power to easily dim the lights as the evening progresses, helping to stimulate melatonin production.

5. Calm App

Calm is a meditation and sleep app perfect for those who find that anxiety and stress keep them up at night. It is available for both iOS and Android, with millions of downloads and fantastic ratings on both. Take your pick from guided meditations, sleep stories, relaxing music, and other features designed to help you fall asleep and stay asleep. It’s a great app for everyone from experienced meditators to those just learning about mindfulness.

We use tech to communicate with friends, track our exercises, order our groceries, and more, so why not also use it to improve our sleep? If you’re looking for ways to get better sleep, the gadgets above might just help you feel more rested and ready to face each new day.
