Mazda Safety Innovation
6 IIHS top Safety Pick+ Awards for 2021 (+video)

Incredibly, the Mazda CX-3, CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3 Sedan and Hatchback have all been named a Top Safety Pick+, the IIHS’s highest safety award. Mazda CX-9 models built after December 2019 are also an IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

To qualify for the 2021 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, Mazda vehicles earned good ratings in each of the Institute’s six crashworthiness evaluations: moderate overlap front, driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. Mazda vehicles also earned advanced or superior ratings for front crash prevention in both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations and good or acceptable headlight ratings.

“With safety a top priority for Mazda, we are proud to have every Mazda vehicle tested earn the coveted 2021 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. This accomplishment stems from our commitment to our owners,” said Mazda North American Operations President Jeff Guyton. “Our customers have come to expect Mazda’s dedication to providing advanced safety technologies paired with dynamic styling, which give them a confident and more enjoyable driving experience.”

ACTIVE SAFETY TECHNOLOGY

Active Safety Technology helps the driver prevent accidents by supporting his or her ability to predict and avoid hazards through visual and auditory alerts.

An active approach to safety, i-ACTIVSENSE® uses milliwave radars and cameras to keep you in tune with your surroundings. While keeping you focused on the road. Get maximum confidence and enjoyment out of your drive knowing these available systems are constantly working to alert you to potential hazards, avert collisions, or reduce their severity when one is unavoidable. It’s another example of Mazda’s philosophy of creating oneness between car and driver.

Mazda’s i-Activsense is an umbrella term covering a series of advanced safety technologies which make use of detection devices such as milliwave radars and cameras. They include active safety technologies that support safer driving by helping the driver to recognize potential hazards, and pre-crash safety technologies which help to avert collisions or reduce their severity in situations where they cannot be avoided.

Mazda’s i-Activsense advanced safety technologies include Advanced Smart City Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection, Smart Brake Support with Collision Warning, Smart Brake Support, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go Function, Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning System with Lane-Keep Assist, Driver Attention Alert, High Beam Control, Adaptive Front-Lighting System, and Traffic Sign Recognition.

PASSIVE SAFETY TECHNOLOGY

The above-mentioned active safety technologies are critical of course, but there are passive safety technologies at work in every Mazda vehicle as well. These technologies help protect occupants and reduce damage in the event of a collision. They include the rigid SKYACTIV®-Body with ring structure, seatbelt with pretensioner and load limiter, anti-intrusion brake pedal, SRS Airbag Systems, and more.

As Mazda continues to invest in lifesaving safety technology, it’s always with a loftier goal in mind: to realize a world where traffic accidents no longer occur. With over 25 years of research and investment into this technology, the automaker believes that their Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) can make this a reality. ITS reduces accidents and congestion by receiving and transmitting information about the location of pedestrians and other cars, then relaying it to drivers. Although it is not yet available, Mazda continues to invest in this technology in the hope of one day making accidents a thing of the past.
