2019 Mazda MX-5 RF
The RF Stands for Retractable Fastback (+video)

Masashi Nakayama, Mazda program manager and chief designer states “we intend to keep refining the car so it can continue to offer customers unique excitement and cement its position as a cultural icon. This is our fixed and unchanging vision for the MX-5, achieved by continually seeking out new ways to make it even more thrilling and satisfying to drive. It was how we felt when we first developed the vehicle nearly three decades ago, and we still feel the same enthusiasm for the MX-5, the world’s favourite roadster.”

Kodo “Soul of Motion” design language is not just a curve in the side panels or the shape of a headlight. You’ll find its essence in every element of the MX-5 RF. It accounts for both the beauty of the RF and the aerodynamics of the RF, evoking the desire to get in and drive and delivering superior performance.

RETRACTABLE FASTBACK

The separate front, middle and rear roof sections give the retractable hardtop the fastest operating time of its kind, opening and closing in only 13 seconds.

Adapt to outside conditions quickly and comfortably with remarkable retractable hardtop technology. Open or close your roof while traveling 10 km/h or less and be prepared for whatever the road throws your way.

lightweight pistons and lighter connecting rods to enable higher rpms, improved combustion chamber and a larger exhaust manifold. You get more power when you need it and a remarkably agile ride.

For the 2019 MX-5 RF, Mazda engineers increased horsepower to 181 hp @ 7,000 rpm. You enjoy even better overall power and performance, especially at higher speeds and that joyful, effortless feeling behind the wheel. The MX-5 RF is available with either a Skyactiv-MT 6-speed manual transmission or 6-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode, Drive Selection switch and paddle shifters.

Mazda engineers also upped torque to 151 lb. ft. @ 4,000 rpm. Torque is what generates the power to make horsepower relevant. Higher torque means better acceleration and power to move you and is especially important at lower speeds.

i-ACTIVSENSE

At Mazda, we’re all about proactive safety measures that swing into action to alert you so that you can avoid a collision or lessen its impact. Now with more standard i-Activsense features, our suite of safety technologies help you stay in tune with your MX-5 RF and focus on the road ahead. Consider what it might be like to have all of these active safety systems working for you:

  • MONITORING SYSTEM (ABSM)
  • REAR CROSS TRAFFIC ALERT (RCTA)
  • SMART CITY BRAKE SUPPORT (SCBS)
  • LANE DEPARTURE WARNING SYSTEM (LDWS)
  • HIGH BEAM CONTROL SYSTEM (HBC)

And all-new for the 2019 models:

  • TRAFFIC SIGN RECOGNITION SYSTEM (TSR) NEW

The Traffic Sign Recognition uses cameras to read road signs such as speed limit, do not enter and stop signs. This information then shows up on the 4.6” multi-information display.

  • WIDE-ANGLE REARVIEW CAMERA

To complement i-Activsense safety technology, the 2019 MX-5 RF also comes with a rearview camera. Just power on your MX-5 RF and shift your MX-5 RF into reverse. A rearview display then shows on your Mazda Connect screen, allowing you to navigate obstacles behind the vehicle. Standard on all MX-5 RF models.
