In the modern day, museum curator Cassie Simmons tries to solve the mystery of a legendary bootlegging family, culminating in an exploration of how the past impacts the present.

And a Dog Called Fig: Solitude, Connection, the Writing Life by Helen Humphreys

Many writers have beloved dog companions. And a Dog Called Fig is a memoir that Humphreys tells through the lives of the dogs that have stood by her side: Virginia Woolf, Grizzle, Gertrude Stein, Basket, Thomas Hardy, Wessex, and, most recently a vizsla called Fig. Though a writing life can be one of solitude, these intelligent and curious creatures provided much-needed companionship and inspiration to the author. It is a powerful story of love, loss, and creativity.

Finally, we meet a detective living in 2400 who is tasked with investigating strange happenings in the Canadian wilderness.

Run Towards the Danger: Confrontations with a Body of Memory by Sarah Polley

From high-risk childbirth to a concussion that changed everything, Polley revisits the past to find ways of moving forward.

Take Your Breath Away by Linwood Barclay

It begins with the main character, Andrew Mason, coming home from a fishing trip to find his wife missing. Though he is a suspect in her disappearance, the police don’t have enough to make a case. After hitting rock bottom, Andrew slowly rebuilds his life and manages to settle down–that is, until it seems that his missing wife has returned, upending his life once again.
