Healthier Habits
6 Easy Ways to Start the Year Off Right

The past year has been difficult for a lot of people, and many are hoping to turn things around in 2021. If you are interested in working towards a healthier you, then it’s best to begin with some simple and sustainable habits. Here are six ideas that can help you start the new year off on the right foot.

Get More Sleep

One of the best steps you can take for better health–both mental and physical–is to get enough sleep every night. A properly rested body is better able to fight off disease and adequate sleep helps reduce your risk of long-term illnesses as well. Plus, when you are well rested, you will have more energy to face the day and tackle every task that comes your way.

Drink Enough Water

Proper hydration is another crucial component of overall health, but many people don’t drink enough water throughout the day. You can remind yourself to drink more by using a water bottle that has consumption markings for different times of day or even a hydration tracking app. There are many strategies for staying hydrated, so choose the one that works best for you.

Stock Your Fridge

If you also want to start eating healthier in the new year, then it starts with stocking your fridge with the right foods. Having fresh and healthy ingredients at the ready will motivate you to cook more at home. By eating out less, you will be better able to control the calories and nutritional value of your meals. You’ll also be saving a lot of money!

Get More Active

Fitting a bit more exercise into your day is always going to have a slew of benefits. From helping you maintain a healthier weight to reducing your risk of illness, physical activity is not to be overlooked. Start the new year by finding a new activity to try, whether that is simply going on a daily walk or picking up a winter sport like skiing or ice skating.

Reduce Your Stress

Stress has a highly negative effect on your overall health, making you more likely to get sick and to develop mental health issues like anxiety and depression. Assess your daily routine, take note of what is causing you the most stress, and see if there is any way you can decrease those stressors. Maybe you just need to find a little more time to relax, or perhaps you will have to limit some of your commitments.

Reduce Your Screen Time

If you have trouble getting enough sleep, fitting in more exercise, or cooking your own meals, then reducing your screen time may make it easier to find some extra time during the day. By watching a little less TV, logging off your computer, and occasionally putting away your phone, you will be able to focus more of your energy where you want it.

A new year brings new hope and opportunity. Capitalize on this chance for change by developing some healthy new habits that can stick with you for the rest of the year and beyond.
