A lot of popular TV shows are filmed in locations across Canada (Arrow, Riverdale, The Handmaid’s Tale), but they aren’t necessarily made by Canadians. If you’d like to support some homegrown talent and production, then here are six fantastic Canadian shows worth a watch.

Cardinal
Cardinal is an award-winning crime drama series that follows police detective John Cardinal and his partner Lise Delorme. It takes place in Algonquin Bay, a fictional city in northern Ontario. As Cardinal and Delorme look into crimes in their city, Cardinal’s past threatens the investigations. The show, which is based off a series of crime novels by writer Giles Blunt, is often considered to be a landmark of Canadian television.

Anne with an E
An adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic and beloved 1908 novel Anne of Green Gables, Anne with an E truly does the novel justice. It follows the adventures of Anne, a young, 19th-century orphan girl living in Prince Edward Island, as she searches for her place in the world. The show was created by Moira Walley-Beckett, an Emmy-winning producer and writer known for her work on Breaking Bad.

Kim’s Convenience
Kim’s Convenience is a sitcom about a Korean-Canadian family who runs a convenience store in Toronto. It follows the father, the mother, the daughter, and their estranged son through humorous misadventures. When the series premiered in 2016, it quickly became a breakout hit. To date, Kim’s Convenience has garnered 23 nominations at the Canadian Screen Awards. If you’re up for a good laugh and good TV, this is one show you don’t want to miss.

Mary Kills People
Marry Harris is a single mother who works as an ER doctor to save people’s lives during the day. At night, however, Mary visits terminally ill patients who wish to end their lives on their own terms. With a premise reminiscent of Dexter, Mary Kills People was another show that garnered quick attention. This dark comedy, however, has a strange yet unique appeal that’s all its own.

Letterkenny
If sitcoms are your style or if you just like to sit back with some light TV, then don’t pass up on the hit show Letterkenny. It follows two friends, Wayne and Daryl, who live in the fictional town of Letterkenny and spend their days drinking at the farm or hanging around town yelling at hockey players. This quick-witted show may play up on stereotypes, but it lovingly captures small-town Canadian culture.

Bad Blood
Another fantastic Canadian crime drama, Bad Blood tells the story of Montreal mob boss Vito Rizzuto. Head of the Rizzuto crime family, Vito was a notorious man who oversaw a multi-million dollar crime empire. Bad Blood explores not only the criminal side of the story but also the Rizzuto family dynamics. The series is based off a 2015 book by the name of Business or Blood: Mafia Boss Vito Rizzuto’s Last War.

As you can see, it’s clear that Canada isn’t lacking in TV talent. Each of these critically acclaimed and well-loved Canadian shows has already been renewed for another season so, once you’re all caught up, you’ll have more new episodes to look forward to.
