2020 Ford Expedition
The Reviews Are In! (+video)

Let’s start with some general impressions of Ford’s biggest three-row SUV:

  • “The 2020 Ford Expedition takes the 20th-century idea of an 8-seater full-size American SUV and brings it bang up to date. It does this by deploying aluminium body panels, a fuel-efficient turbocharged engine, driver-assistance technology, and a sophisticated independent rear suspension. So even though it’s still based on a truck platform, its refinement is readily apparent. The Expedition Max versions are longer, providing more space for passengers and cargo.” – Kelly Blue Book

Too often full-sized SUV’s can seem like dinosaurs from the past – especially in the looks department. Not so with Expedition:

  • “The Expedition’s square-rigged body and tailored cabin set a high, swank bar.” – The Car Connection

  • “Clean, pure styling marks the 2020 Ford Expedition.” – newcartestdrive.com

The critics also say that although it’s based on the wildly successful F-150 pickup truck, Expedition hides its DNA well:

  • “Even though Ford’s Expedition embraces its truck heritage, it doesn’t skimp on comfort or luxury touches in the tailored cabin. Vast space allows all seven potential occupants to spread out. Front seats are nicely padded and all-day comfortable, with cloth upholstery. With its defiantly square-rigged, stretched-out body, the 2020 Expedition sets a high bar for luxury as well as passenger comfort.” – newcartestdrive.com

What do the pros think about Expedition’s efficiency, technology and safety systems?

  • “Regardless of which Expedition you choose, its fuel economy beats that of the Nissan Armada, the Toyota Sequoia, most Chevy Tahoe configurations and Suburban configurations.” – Autoblog.com

  • “The 2020 Expedition now comes standard with a bevy of safety technology—everything from blind-spot monitors to automatic emergency braking and active lane control. The Expedition also has very good outward vision.”
    – The Car Connection

  • “The NHTSA gave both regular and extended-length versions of the big SUV a five-star rating overall, and for frontal and side impacts.”
    – newcartestdrive.com

But what’s it like driving such a massive vehicle? Surely it has to be a chore to navigate streets with, right?

  • There’s no denying the expansive size of the 2020 Expedition, but that doesn’t automatically mean lumbering weight. The combination of aluminium-intensive construction, turbocharged V6 engine and 10-speed transmission doesn’t exactly make the Expedition sprightly, but it’s more responsive and accelerative than its dimensions might suggest.”
    – Kelly Blue Book

  • “The Expedition breaks what we know about big SUVs with great ride quality and snappy acceleration.” –The Car Connection

How about the drivetrain?

  • “The turbocharged engine is also a real peach. There’s torque everywhere, very little lag, and doesn’t possess the uncouth truckish roar of its competitors’ V8 engines. The 400-hp Platinum version is even stronger. In total, the Expedition’s engine represents a key reason to consider it, especially if you’re comparing the Max to the Chevy Suburban, which produces only 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque from its 5.3-litre V8. We also like the Expedition’s 10-speed automatic, which always seems to know the right gear to choose for the situation.” – autoblog.com

And in summary …

  • “Yes, the Ford Expedition is a great large SUV. Because it has the best combination of cargo and passenger space, safety and reliability ratings, positive reviews from automotive journalists, and available family-friendly features in its class, we named the Expedition our 2020 Best Large SUV for Families.” – MSN Autos
