Activities You Can Do While Social Distancing

Though most indoor activities are still closed or limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there are plenty of activities you can do outside while maintaining social distancing.

Getting outdoors is important for keeping the whole family physically active, and it is beneficial for maintaining good mental health as well. If you have been feeling cooped up, then it’s time to head out, get some fresh air, and relieve some stress. Take advantage of the warmer weather with some of the following activities.

Enjoy a Walk

It’s easy to maintain social distancing when taking a walk. Even if you do pass by other people, simply move aside to give them enough space and continue on your way. You can get to know your neighbourhood or go to a nearby park, enjoying the health benefits of light physical exercise while you are at it.

Have a Picnic

Having an outdoor picnic is a good way to spend a warm day relaxing in the sun. Just spread out a blanket and bring along some delicious food. It is also a good way to catch up with friends and family, as long as they sit at least two metres away and bring their own food!

Fly a Kite

On windy days when it might not be so pleasant to have a picnic, why not fly a kite instead? It’s an activity that naturally requires people to give each other space and it is best done in a large, open area, making it well-suited to the times.

Draw Chalk Art

A lot of fun for kids (and parents too!) drawing chalk art lets you stretch those creative muscles. Your driveway provides a fantastic canvas, but some people have also been taking to leaving encouraging messages on sidewalks and pathways. Just watch out for others walking nearby.

Go Birdwatching

Get extra enjoyment out of your time outside by looking up at the birds that also call your neighbourhood home. Search online for some of the local birds in your area and see if you can spot them when you go on a walk or have a picnic. There are even some great bird-watching apps you can download.

Play Pokemon Go

Pokemon Go is a fantastic game to play on your own or with your family. Many parents and kids have fun teaming up, catching pokemon, and battling gyms together. The game has also recently added several features that make it easier to play from home or while social distancing outside.

Have a Scavenger Hunt

Kids love scavenger hunts, and the best part is that you can do them just about anywhere. Hold one around your home or even compile a quick list of items you are likely to come across outside before leaving for a walk.

Try Geocaching

Geocaching is the ultimate scavenger hunt, where participants receive coordinates to hidden caches all around the world. To get started, all you have to do is download a geocaching app. You will be given the coordinates and sometimes clues to follow that will lead you to your treasure.

As long as you remain mindful of others, spending time outside is a great way to have some fun and stay active. From enjoying a walk around the neighbourhood to trying a new activity with your family, there is a lot you can do in the great outdoors.
