5 Free Resources to Help Kids Keep Learning

With most schools across Canada still closed and likely to remain closed until fall, kids will need to continue learning at home. Thankfully, there are some great resources that can help.

Though educators are doing a fantastic job with online lesson planning and ensuring that kids have what they need to continue their schoolwork, extra educational tools are always beneficial. Consider these five free online resources that you can use to supplement your child’s learning throughout the rest of the school year.

The Canadian Encyclopedia

There is no better online resource for kids who are studying Canadian history and culture than The Canadian Encyclopedia. It is an interactive repository with more than 19,500 articles, all of them available in English and French. Some of the high-profile names that have contributed to The Canadian Encyclopedia include Margaret Atwood and David Suzuki. The website is divided into different sections covering a range of topics like Canadian culture, politics, geography, and more. Students can take advantage of different types of specially curated content to enhance their learning.

Sesame Street

For younger kids who haven’t quite progressed to in-depth history lessons yet, the Sesame Street website is a great choice for content that is both entertaining and educational. Kids can choose from watching videos, playing games, and making art. New videos are posted every week, giving them something to look forward to. Expansive parental controls offer features like making playlist activities and keeping track of what your child has been doing. Parents also have the ability to lock the site so that your child can’t navigate away.

Pearson Canada

To help kids continue learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, Pearson Canada is offering complimentary open access to many of its most widely used K-12 books. Parents can find online versions of math activity books organized by grade level, online activities for special awareness days, and a whole host of information to help families balance working and learning from home. For high-quality, online resources that you know you can trust, Pearson Canada is a good choice.

Scholastic Canada

Known for its beloved book fairs, Scholastic Canada is another major Canadian educational company offering support for kids learning at home. You can take advantage of complimentary, limited-time access to Scholastic digital platforms that support children in literacy and science. Children of all ages can also enjoy a wide range of fun educational quizzes, activities, and games that will keep their minds sharp. Additionally, parents will find excellent, grade-appropriate resources for teaching children about the novel coronavirus and about how to stay safe.

Khan Academy

Though created by a California-based nonprofit organization, Khan Academy is designed to be an online learning hub for children all around the world. The site offers free programs for kids of all ages complete with learning schedules to help kids and parents develop a routine. Khan Academy covers most major subject areas that your child might be learning in school and offers interactive content like videos, articles, and exercises to keep kids engaged.

Help your child stay on track by using the right online resources suited to their grade level and lesson plans. It will take some of the pressure off you and provide your child with high-quality tools to support their education.
