Subaru Crosstrek
Winner: Best Retained value Award (+video)

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek features an athletic exterior design, the choice of two potent SUBARU BOXER® engines and exceptional overall capability—so this class-leading compact AWD crossover is still more desirable than ever. For more adventurous drives, there’s generous ground clearance, plenty of cargo space and genuine go-anywhere versatility, courtesy of Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD and the long-travel suspension system.

In the city, the Crosstrek delivers all of the advantages of a sporty hatchback, including crisp response, superior handling and stellar fuel efficiency. The Subaru Crosstrek is also equipped with more advanced safety features, including enhanced EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology with Lane Centring Assist.

With a refresh and the addition of the new Outdoor trim level, the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek was also named Best Small Utility in Canada for 2021 by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) as well as TOP SAFETY PICK (on models with EyeSight and specific headlights) by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The prestigious win of Best Retained Value in its class demonstrates not only the long-term value of Subaru’s popular Crosstrek, but of Subaru vehicles in general, which is a factor important to the decision making process of purchasing a vehicle. The Subaru Impreza also impressed in the competition, placing second in the Car: Main category.

The Canadian Black Book Best Retained Value Awards acknowledge vehicles that retain the highest percentage of their original MSRP after four years. This is extremely valuable information for consumers, given that depreciation is the single largest expense of vehicle ownership. For November 2021, the awards program analyzed model year 2018 cars, trucks, and SUVs in 19 categories.

“Our strategic planning always includes providing long-lasting value to our customers,” said Subaru Canada Inc. chairman, president and CEO Yasushi Enami. “Awards like these give us confidence that our goals are being achieved.”

About Canadian Black Book

For 60 years, Canadian Black Book has been the trusted and unbiased Canadian automotive industry source for vehicle values. Today the company has grown into a leading data provider of vehicle valuations, residual value forecast solutions and VIN decoding. Canadian Black Book tools and information are considered ‘The Authority’ for vehicle values not only by car dealers and manufacturers but also the leasing, finance, insurance and wholesale sectors. In 2020 Canadian Black Book is bringing to market its Enhance Vehicle Matching (EVM) solution, which will allow the industry to more consistently decode 17-digit VINs down to a specific trim package allowing a more precise vehicle valuation.

The fourteenth edition of the much anticipated awards featured the highest ever industry average used vehicle retained value across all vehicle models in Canada, since the yearly awards began in 2007. The retained value across every vehicle in Canada measured for the 2021 Awards showed that four-year-old models (2017 model year) held an astonishing 61.5% of original MSRP, industry-wide. To put this into perspective, the closest year was just last year, when the industry average was 56.6%, and for further perspective, note that 2019 saw a 52% industry average. In short, today used vehicles are holding far more value than ever before.

“In terms of retained values, the past year has been a wild ride, to say the least. We have been through steep record-setting declines last spring, followed by rapid increases culminating in record level retained values in Canada across the board,” says Yolanda Biswah, Vice President, Sales at Canadian Black Book. “Much of the gains have been propped up by economic phenomena directly related to the global pandemic,” she adds.
