Three Little Words That Mean So Much (+video)

Sometimes, finding the correct location can be a challenge, even with a street address. The what3words system has assigned a unique three-word address to every 3 m x 3 m square of the planet, allowing users to find precise locations by using three words that are significantly easier to remember and input (by voice or text) than a typical street address. As the simplest way to describe a place, it takes the guesswork out of the navigation experience – whether that means finding the entrance to a building or locating a remote spot in the wilderness.

In order to arrive at a desired location, a driver simply has to use the voice command “Navigate to what3words,” followed by the three-word address, which can be determined either by visiting what3words.com or by downloading the free what3words mobile app onto a phone.

Currently, what3words voice navigation is available (in English only) on select new Mercedes-Benz vehicles that are equipped with the latest COMAND generation or MBUX infotainment system and linked to a Mercedes me account. These include the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, C-Class, E-Class, CLS, S-Class and G-Class, from model year 2019-on.

Mercedes-Benz Canada teamed up with artists to produce an original video series that demonstrates how what3words can be put into practice in people’s daily lives. Kicking off the series, Montreal-based singer-songwriter Charlotte Cardin uses “Hey Mercedes, navigate to what3words,” followed by each unique 3-word address, to take the viewer on an adventure to some of her favourite spots in the city. As of mid-August, fans of Allie X will be able to follow her on a journey through Toronto, and in September The Strumbellas will lead viewers on their own tour of the city.

Say 3 Words To Navigate Anywhere.

what3words is the simplest way to talk about location. Every 3 m x 3 m in the world has a unique 3-word address. Now every precise location – a restaurant front door, an airport car park entrance or a remote beachside viewpoint – has a simple and accurate address that is far easier to input than a regular street address.

Why Don’t Addresses Work Well For Navigation Systems?

Many street addresses are too long and complicated for easy text input, and voice systems often struggle to pull up the correct destination.

Have you ever given your navigation system an address, only for it not to be recognized? Perhaps you ended up at the back of a building, or at a completely different street with the same name.

How many of the places you need to navigate to have no address at all? Like parks, sports fields and parking spots.

Mercedes-Benz has the solution.

What3words Voice Navigation:

  • Quick precise navigation and easy to enter by voice
  • Precision navigation to specific entrances
  • Navigate to places that don’t have a street address
  • Built-in error detection prevents mistakes
