Volkswagen’s all-new, all-electric SUV, the ID.4, began stacking up awards and accolades the day it was released. And even after winning the coveted World Car of the Year Award, this innovative and now globally recognized vehicle was not about to rest on its laurels.

Volkswagen is now pleased to announce that the all-new ID.4 electric SUV has also won the Save The Planet Award in the 2021 CarBuzz Awards. The CarBuzz Save The Planet Award goes to the hybrid or electric vehicle that CarBuzz determines to best bundle fuel-saving (or eliminating) technology with qualities such as style, performance, and capability.

The ID.4 was directly competing against two other high-profile and all-electric new vehicles, specifically Ford’s Mustang Mach-E and new manufacturer Rivian’s R1T pickup truck, but ultimately, the competition wasn’t even close.

“Despite the best efforts from automakers to increase market share, many EVs are still too expensive for the average consumer. The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 aims to change this with a reasonable starting price. Volkswagen’s entry-level electric crossover offers 201 hp with up to 260 miles (400km) of range. Buyers who want more power and all-weather grip can opt for the dual-motor version, which adds all-wheel drive and a huge output bump to 295 hp. VW managed to make the ID.4 the least expensive AWD EV on the market, and the range only takes a slight hit at up to 249 miles.

Not only does the ID.4 undercut the Mustang Mach-E on price, but it also offers impressive driving enjoyment similar to a Golf GTI. Excellent steering, a playful chassis, and ample power in the AWD version combine to make the ID.4 a spirited driver’s car. VW’s hard pivot away from diesel looks like a success, and the ID.4 is the first sign of what’s to come from the German automaker.” – from the carbuzz.com website

“The Volkswagen ID.4 represents a major step in the transition from ICE to EV powertrains,” says Roger Biermann, CarBuzz Managing Editor. “Not only is it a major investment from one of the world’s largest legacy automakers, but it democratizes electric vehicles by bringing range and technology to the masses at an affordable price. For too long we’ve been promised affordable EVs, but VW has delivered, backing it up with quality construction, a huge national dealer service network, and a charging network that can go toe-to-toe with the best.”

“With the 2021 ID.4, Volkswagen proves an electric vehicle can be fun and good for the planet at the same time,” says Jared Rosenholtz, CarBuzz Editor-at-Large. “The rear-drive ID.4 offers respectable power for a compact crossover, while the dual-motor all-wheel-drive model dials up the excitement with nearly 300 horsepower. We loved the ID.4’s nimble driving manners and premium interior. This car shows that VW is ready for the electrified era.”

“We are thrilled to win the Save The Planet Award from CarBuzz,” said Scott Keogh, CEO, Volkswagen Group of America. “Volkswagen is committed to bringing e-mobility to the masses. The ID.4 is packaged and priced to win the hearts of American buyers, so they don’t have to choose between the functionality they need and zero-tailpipe emission driving.”

Built on the brand’s MEB electric vehicle architecture—the modular electric drive matrix—the ID.4 competes in the compact SUV segment, the world’s largest market segment.
