2019 Volkswagen Tiguan
Named Cars.com’s Best Compact SUV of 2019

“We redesigned the Tiguan from the ground up last year to meet the needs of American drivers and their families,” said Scott Keogh, CEO, Volkswagen Group of America. “Being named ‘Best Compact SUV’ two times in a row is validation that Tiguan is a serious competitor in the segment.”

“The Tiguan returns as champion on the strength of how it drives, and you give up nothing in roominess, media, safety and driver assistance features and cabin comfort for it,” said Jennifer Newman, Editor-in-Chief, Cars.com. “The Tiguan win is a decisive victory against the newest and best-selling in the class. It topped or tied in a staggering nine out of 16 categories: front seats, rear seats, multimedia and controls, interior quality, powertrain, handling, noise, cargo storage and child-seat fitment.”

The Cars.com Compact SUV Challenge focused on SUVs updated or redesigned since the site’s last compact SUV test in 2017 and invited back podium finishers (Volkswagen Tiguan, Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5, the latter of which declined participation).

Every SUV included all-wheel drive, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a sunroof, in-dash navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control and more. All included Apple CarPlay® integration and all but one Android Auto® integration. Scoring categories included front and backseat comfort and amenities, interior quality, cargo provisions, fuel economy, child-safety seat fitment, safety and driver-assistance features, handling, braking, ride quality and value.

Testing resulted in the following ranking:

  1. 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL Premium R-Line
    2. 2019 Subaru Forester Touring
    3. 2019 Hyundai Tucson Ultimate
    4. 2019 Honda CR-V Touring
    5. 2019 Toyota RAV4 Limited
    6. 2019 Jeep Cherokee Limited
    7. 2019 Nissan Rogue SL

Driver-Assistance Systems

And to meet the demands of Canadian drivers, the 2019 Tiguan offers a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technology. Available features include:

  • Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring (Front Assist)
  • Blind Spot Monitor Rear Traffic Alert
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Lane Keeping System (Lane Assist)

Front Assist is intended to warn drivers of potential frontal collisions (Forward Collision Warning) with vehicles and pedestrians, and in some cases provide automatic braking assistance (Autonomous Emergency Braking).

Blind Spot Monitor uses two radar sensors at the rear of the vehicle to scan the approaching traffic and is intended to warn drivers of potential danger in adjacent lanes. If the driver uses the turn signal to indicate a lane change while a vehicle is detected in a blind spot, the system utilizes a flashing LED symbol in the outer area of the side mirrors.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) uses a forward facing radar to maintain a set speed while helping maintain a set distance to the vehicle in front. The driver sets the speed and the desired spacing via buttons on the multifunction steering wheel and can further use those buttons to adjust and cancel the ACC function while the accelerator can be used to override the ACC function.

If there is an indication that the vehicle is unintentionally straying from its lane without using a turn signal, The Lane Keeping System (Lane Assist) actively countersteers to help keep the vehicle in the lane. The system’s camera recognizes visible lane markings and, using a special algorithm, calculates the risk of the car leaving the lane
