Named Top Rated Sports Car (+video)

Subaru recently announced that their BRZ was named Edmunds Top Rated Sports Car for 2022. Edmunds is an online automotive guide helping millions of shoppers each month select, price and buy cars with confidence.

“The Subaru BRZ reminds us all that you don’t need to spend a fortune to enjoy a great drive. This is the definition of a fun, affordable sports car.” – edmunds.com

“We are thrilled the BRZ was recognized by Edmunds as the Top Rated Sports Car for 2022,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO of Subaru of America, Inc. “It’s our mission as an automaker to develop vehicles that consumers not only can trust, but can also have a great time driving, and the BRZ does just that.”

To determine the Top Rated Awards, Edmunds tests more than 300 vehicles on road and track, driving more than half a million miles in the process. Awards were presented to vehicles in nine segments this year: Sedan, Luxury Sedan, SUV, Luxury SUV, Truck, EV, Luxury EV, Sports Car and Editors’ Choice. Per Edmunds’ standards, the Top Rated vehicles are the best cars on sale today.

As sports cars grow in size and complexity, purity of purpose and affordability often fade away. That’s why we are so impressed with the redesigned Subaru BRZ. It puts enjoyable back-to-basics performance in front of a wide audience, and for that, it’s the Edmunds Top Rated Sports Car.

Just about every Subaru these days is an all-wheel-drive SUV, but not the Subaru BRZ. This is the company’s low-slung, rear-wheel-drive sport coupe co-developed with Toyota, and now it has a fresh lease on life for 2022 thanks to a full redesign.

The diminutive BRZ possesses a nimbleness and a balance that’s difficult to find in sports cars that cost three times as much. Thanks to a stiffer chassis, newly available high-performance summer tires and many chassis upgrades, the BRZ driver, no matter his or her skill level, will enjoy capability and confidence. Subaru also added a more powerful engine, making the BRZ quicker and easier to drive.

The 2022 BRZ still has the same key attributes that made the first-generation 2013-2020 car so appealing, such as its lightweight, back-to-basics rear-wheel-drive architecture and affordable-for-the-masses pricing. But it also has some key improvements, including a more powerful engine, fresh exterior styling and some updated tech on the inside.

Replacing the previous 2.0-litre engine is a 2.4-litre flat-four making 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft, an increase of 23 hp and 28 lb-ft over the previous model. This engine is smoother, sounds better, and delivers a much more satisfying midrange punch of power. Handling has improved too, thanks in large part to optional grippy summer tires, as well as minor but important tweaks to the chassis and suspension. Subaru has even added a suite of advanced aids, known as EyeSight, to BRZs equipped with automatic transmissions.

Overall, we’re impressed with the new BRZ and find it to be a great pick for a low-priced performance car. Read our Expert Rating to get our test team’s full analysis of its performance, comfort and more.

The all-new 2022 BRZ is powered by a new 2.4-litre (naturally aspirated) 228 hp SUBARU BOXER® engine paired with a six-speed close-ratio manual transmission or a six-speed electronic direct-control automatic transmission. Available now at Subaru retailers Canadawide, the second-generation BRZ is offered in two trim levels, Premium and Limited.
