After making its international debut in Summer 2018, the Kona quickly claimed top market share in the subcompact SUV segment and has sold more than 14,400 units in Canada to date.

With a strong, impactful design and uncompromising individuality, the Kona is Hyundai’s first entry into the fast-growing subcompact SUV segment. The vehicle’s new platform and enhanced driving dynamics resonated incredibly well with Canadians, quickly making it the hottest selling all-new vehicle in Canada in its inaugural year.

The Kona serves as Hyundai’s answer to rapidly changing customer preferences towards technology, style, and flexibility. The vehicle was designed with the needs of urban, active customers in mind, boasting a spacious interior and best-in-class driving in the subcompact SUV segment. The Kona blends exceptional fuel efficiency with a fun driving experience, delivering power and performance levels that are not often found in vehicles in its segment.

“It’s been an incredible first year for the Kona and we’re thrilled to be recognized for our innovative, industry-leading work in this segment,” said Don Romano, President and CEO of Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. “Expanding our range of SUVs to best meet the needs of Canadians is a top priority for Hyundai, and being acknowledged as leaders in the category shows that we’re absolutely moving in the right direction.”

With an all-new subcompact SUV platform developed for the Kona, Hyundai looks to set new standards for the category. The vehicle’s chassis is engineered to be rigid, topped with a lightweight body for dynamic driving performance and a comfortable ride. The powertrain layout is optimized to create a compact platform capable of incorporating the car’s four-wheel-drive system while maintaining interior space.

POWERFUL AND EFFICIENT POWERTRAINS

Kona powertrain offerings have top efficiency levels as a primary target. Kona is offered with a choice of two gasoline powertrains:

  1. A 2.0-litre 4-cylinder Atkinson engine producing 147 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 132 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
  2. Limited and Ultimate trims offer a 1.6-litre 4-cylinder direct-injected, turbocharged engine generating 175 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 195 lb.-ft. of torque. Torque delivery starts at only 1,500 rpm and holds through 4,500 rpm, for low-RPM responsiveness and performance in everyday driving conditions. The turbo engine is coupled to a seven-speed EcoShift dual-clutch transmission (DCT).

ACTIVE SAFETY

The new standard Hyundai SmartSense safety technologies (listed below) on the Kona add additional protection for drivers and passengers. For example, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist can detect and help warn the driver of a potential collision. If the driver does not react to avoid the impact, the system may apply emergency braking.

Standard Hyundai SmartSense safety technologies:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Driver Attention Warning

2020 Kona also includes a newly-developed Smart Cruise Control feature on Ultimate models. Smart Cruise Control functions as a typical cruise control system and adds radar sensors that help the vehicle to maintain a fixed following distance behind any vehicles in front.
