Trail Tech
Best Outdoor Adventure Apps to Download

There really is an app for everything, including a variety of useful apps for all of your outdoor adventures. The right tech will definitely improve your experience on the trail.

Whether you are looking to go hiking, camping, backpacking, mountain biking, or even snowshoeing, certain apps can provide a wealth of information for a more enjoyable and successful trip. Below are five in particular that are among the favourites of outdoor enthusiasts. Each of these apps is available for both iOS and Android, and they should all have a spot on your home screen if you like to get outdoors.

AllTrails

AllTrails contains information on hiking and biking trails all across the globe. Find out how long a trail is, what elevation gain to expect, how to get there, where to park, and more. Trails can also be sorted based on if they are kid-friendly and dog-friendly, as well as if they are suitable for activities like mountain biking and geocaching. You can download offline maps to consult even when out of service and use the GPS activity tracker to log your hikes and bike rides.

iNaturalist

If you love getting out into nature, you probably also love learning about the plants and animals you encounter along the way. iNaturalist is essentially a social network for naturalists, scientists, and nature lovers to share their observations and receive crowdsourced identifications for the plants and animals they’ve seen. The app was created in a joint collaboration between the National Geographic Society and the California Academy of Sciences, and the data it creates is used by scientists looking to better understand and protect the natural world.

SkyView

Camping provides a wonderful opportunity to do some sky gazing away from the light pollution of the city, and SkyView can help you find celestial objects wherever you are. The intuitive app uses your phone camera to locate and identify constellations, stars, galaxies, planets, and even satellites that may be passing overhead. All you have to do is point your device skyward, and the app will do the rest!

PackPoint

If you often go on overnight adventures and could use help deciding what to pack, then PackPoint can do a lot of the work for you. The app will build you a personalized packing list based on where you are traveling to, what activities you plan to do there, what the weather will be, how many nights you are traveling for, and more. A range of features lets you customize your list even further.

First Aid

The official First Aid app from the Canadian Red Cross will ensure that you are always ready in the case of an accident. It contains easily accessible information about how to handle all of the most common first aid emergencies, along with videos and step-by-step instructions. You’ll also find safety tips for winter weather and other natural emergencies like earthquakes and tornadoes. Plus, preloaded content means you can access the help you need even when service is down.

Getting into the great outdoors is often about unplugging but, when used correctly, the right tech can actually help enrich the experience. Try these five apps on your next adventure to see which ones you like best.
