From Coast to Ghost
The Most Haunted Locations Across Canada

During the Halloween season, there’s nothing more fun than ghost stories that send a shiver down your spine. It’s even better if the stories are about real-life places that you might be able to see in person. From coast to coast, Canada hosts an array of haunted locales, each with its own tale of sorrow or mysterious occurrences. Here are some of the most haunted locations that beckon the curious and the brave.

1. Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, Alberta

Arguably one of Canada’s most picturesque hotels, the Fairmont Banff Springs in Alberta’s Banff National Park is also one of the most haunted. Legends tell of a bride who tragically fell to her death down the hotel’s grand staircase on her wedding day and is now frequently seen in her wedding dress floating down those same stairs. Another spirit, Sam the Bellman, who worked at the hotel during the 1960s and 1970s, is said to still assist guests from time to time, only to vanish into thin air.

2. The Old Spaghetti Factory, Vancouver, British Columbia

Dining in Vancouver’s Gastown can take an eerie turn if you choose to eat at The Old Spaghetti Factory. Staff and guests alike have reported strange occurrences, including cold breezes and mysterious apparitions. The most famous ghost is a tram conductor, still lingering from the days when a trolley car system operated in the city. Some say the source of the apparition is an old trolley car situated inside the restaurant itself.

3. Craigdarroch Castle, Victoria, British Columbia

This beautiful Victorian 39-room castle was the residence of coal baron Robert Dunsmuir and his family. Since then, visitors and staff have reported seeing apparitions of his wife, Joan Dunsmuir, on the main staircase, pianos playing on their own, and children’s laughter echoing through the halls.

4. The Fort Garry Hotel, Winnipeg, Manitoba

This historic hotel, built in 1913, is home to one of Canada’s most famous ghost stories. Room 202 is said to be haunted by a woman who took her own life after hearing of her husband’s death. She now waits for her husband to return, and guests report seeing her figure. Some say that the entire second floor is haunted by her presence, leading to many unusual encounters and occurrences.

5. Ottawa Jail Hostel, Ontario

The Ottawa Jail Hostel was once a maximum-security prison that operated from 1862 to 1972. Though now a hostel, its dark past lingers. The jail was the site of numerous executions and guests often report hearing mysterious footsteps and seeing ghostly apparitions. The most famous is Patrick J. Whelan, an inmate who was hanged and is said to still wander the halls near the former gallows.

6. Plains of Abraham, Quebec City

The site of a pivotal and bloody 1759 battle between the French and British armies, the Plains of Abraham is said to be haunted by the fallen soldiers. Many have reported seeing the apparitions of soldiers, hearing the sounds of battle, and even smelling gunpowder.

Whether you’re a skeptic or a believer, there’s no denying that stories of haunting send a tingle down the spine. This Halloween, maybe a visit to one of these haunted hotspots is in order. Just remember, you’ve been warned!
