Spring Cleaning Tasks That Are Often Overlooked

Spring cleaning is a time-honoured tradition that helps to scrub away the remnants of winter gloom from our homes. While most people have a checklist that covers the basics like vacuuming, dusting, and maybe even tackling that scary junk drawer, there are a few tasks that often slip through the cracks—quite literally, in some cases. Here are some areas that you might be overlooking.

1. Under and Behind

Out of sight truly does mean out of mind, which causes most of us to ignore cleaning underneath and behind heavy furniture and appliances. It might seem like a daunting task requiring effort to move that couch or fridge, but the treasures (or horrors) found there—lost pens, forgotten socks, pet toys, and an unsettling amount of dust—make it a worthwhile endeavour.

2. What About the Window Treatments?

We don’t usually miss wiping down the windows during spring cleaning, but what about the treatments? Curtains, blinds, and shades can harbour dust, allergens, and even odours. Giving them a thorough clean or launder can brighten a room and improve air quality. It’s like giving your house a chic new pair of glasses frames through which to view the spring bloom.

3. Vetting the Vents

Another area to pay attention to is your vents. Heating and air conditioning vents can become clogged with dust and debris, reducing efficiency and air quality. A quick vacuum or wipe-down can prevent this, ensuring your home’s air system is running smoothly and not circulating dust throughout your freshly cleaned abode.

4. Top Shelf Touch-Up

High shelves and the tops of cabinets are also often out of sight, out of mind, until one day, you reach up and come back with a hand covered in dust. These areas are notorious for collecting grime, so giving them some attention not only contributes to the cleanliness of your home but also prevents that dust from circulating in the air.

5. Appliance Deep Dive

Even if you clean the outside of your appliances regularly, when was the last time you cleaned your dishwasher’s filter, vacuumed the refrigerator coils, or ran a cleaning cycle on your washing machine? These tasks can extend the life of your appliances and improve their efficiency—saving you money and reducing headaches down the line.

6. Keeping Baseboards Beautiful

Baseboards collect dust and scuffs over time, so giving them a thorough clean can surprisingly elevate the look of your rooms. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference, like adding a subtle frame to your living spaces.

7. The Devil is in the Details

Light switches, door handles, cabinet knobs, and remote controls are touched daily but often miss the cleaning cut. Wiping these down with disinfectant can not only keep them looking good but also stop the spread of germs.

8. Digital Dusting

Physical cleaning is crucial, but don’t forget about your digital spaces. Organizing files, deleting unnecessary photos, and unsubscribing from emails you no longer read can feel just as refreshing as physical cleaning.

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be a chore dreaded all winter long. The satisfaction of a home truly cleaned—top to bottom, inside and out—can make your space feel refreshed, revitalized, and ready for the season ahead.
