Clear and Simple Tips for a Healthy Glow

There is a lot of information out there about skincare, so it can be hard to figure out which tips are right for you. Sometimes, it’s best to keep things simple and start with the basics.

With the dizzying number of skincare products available, you’d be excused for thinking that a good routine needs to be quite complicated. However, many trendy routines simply repackage a few basic dermatological guidelines. Good skin care doesn’t require a cabinet full of high-end brands or much of your time. Here are some core principles to follow that will help you keep your skin clear, healthy, and happy.

Keep Your Skin Moisturized

Skin is an important barrier that protects your entire body. To do its job properly, it needs to stay moisturized. Dry skin will crack and flake, which can make it itchy and inflamed. Hydrating materials frequently used in moisturizers include hyaluronic acid, ceramides, mineral oil, and petrolatum. The best lotion is one you use on a regular basis, so try a few different products to see which one you like best.

Protect Your Skin from the Sun

The sun’s UV rays break down the skin’s collagen and cause DNA mutations, which can lead to wrinkles, dark spots, and even skin cancer. The best way to protect yourself is to use sunscreen. Sunscreen creates an extra barrier which prevents UV damage. An SPF 50+ sunscreen containing zinc or titanium is usually recommended by dermatologists. However, any sunscreen is better than none. If you have a brand or a product you tolerate well, it’s better to use that than nothing at all.

Harness the Power of Retinoids

Retinoids are the key ingredients in many skincare products for good reason: they can reduce the look of wrinkles, minimize dark spots, help with scarring, and even improve acne. Some people do find retinoids mildly irritating at first, so start by using a small amount a few nights a week. Combining a retinoid cream with a good moisturizer can help with any irritation or dryness. Most people eventually find that their skin adjusts.

Use the Right Active Ingredients for Your Needs

Skincare products come with a range of active ingredients, so make sure you choose the right ones. Some of the most common ingredients include salicylic acid (pore cleansing and gentle exfoliating), azelaic acid (anti-inflammatory), and benzoyl peroxide (acne-fighting).

Steer Clear of Abrasive Exfoliators

Many exfoliating products are far too abrasive and can cause more harm than good. Over-exfoliation can make your skin feel itchy, tight, and even painful.

Be Consistent

The key to a skincare routine that produces consistent results is to find the products that work for you and use them consistently. It may take some trial and error but, once you have a few core products, you’ll be all set.

Keeping your skin healthy and looking great doesn’t have to be a chore. In fact, once you see how it glows with the help of just a bit of moisturizer, sunscreen, and retinoids, you’ll be motivated to stick to the simple skincare routine that works for you.
