The Most Unique Summer Activities

Coast to coast, Canada is brimming with experiences that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. From spectacular nighttime shows–both natural and man-made–to thrilling wilderness adventures, this country has it all. If you want to end your summer with a bang, then one of these unique activities should be at the top of your list.

Go Whale Watching on Either Coast

Both the east and west coasts of Canada offer fantastic whale watching opportunities and plenty of tour companies that will get you up close and personal with these majestic creatures. In British Columbia, tours depart from both Vancouver and Victoria to remote locations where you can catch sight of orcas, grey whales, minke, and humpback whales. Newfoundland and Labrador are also home to one of the world’s largest humpback whale populations, as well as orca, sperm whales, minke, and more.

Sightsee from the Columbia Icefield Skywalk

The Icefields Parkway in Alberta is one of the most beautiful drives on earth and, along the way, you’ll come across the Columbia Icefield Skywalk. This walkway clings to a cliffside 280 metres above the glacier-formed Sunwapta Valley. Look around at the tall ice-capped peaks of the continental divide and, if you’re brave enough, straight down through the glass floor.

Explore Canada’s Largest Sand Dunes

Canada may not be known for its sand dunes, but we do have some impressive ones along the shores of northern Saskatchewan’s Lake Athabasca. The dunes stretch for around 100 km and rise as high as 30 metres. The area is only accessible by float plane, but camping is free and guided tours are available.

Ride the Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster

The Ridge Runner Coaster in Ontario’s Blue Mountains allows you to zoom (or cruise) down a hillside at a speed you control. The two-person cart winds through trees and meadows on a 1 km track. It’s an exhilarating experience that you can enjoy every season, but it is particularly gorgeous and refreshing during the balmy summer months.

Discover Magic in Forest Lumina

Forest Lumina is a whimsical nighttime experience in Quebec’s Coaticook’s Canyon, unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Follow over 2.5 km of multimedia pathways that lead you through multiple zones telling the story of a cast of magical characters. Each experience lasts from three to five minutes and guests are welcome to go at their own pace.

Go Sea Kayaking at the Hopewell Rocks

The incredible Hopewell Rocks in New Brunswick’s Bay of Fundy were carved patiently by the area’s massive tides over thousands of years. There are more than 20 of these rocks spread out along 2 km of the shoreline, which you can walk on foot when the tides are low. When the high tides come in, the entire area is transformed, and you can kayak around the rocks instead!

Marvel at the Northern Lights in Yellowknife

Late summer is the best time to see the breathtaking northern lights in Yellowknife. You’ll have to stay up late, but the city’s remarkably clear skies make it easy to catch this cosmic light show. There are many aurora-viewing tours available to provide visitors with the best experience.

Summer is still here, and you still have time to make the most of it. Close it off with a road trip to one of these fantastic spots and enjoy a unique activity that you won’t soon forget.
