Winter Camping Essentials
Important Gear for Your Adventure

Going on a camping trip is a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, especially after a busy time like the holiday season. While you’ll have to do some extra prep to face the winter cold, it’s as good a time as any to head into the forest or the mountains and get away from it all for a while. All you have to do is make sure you have the proper gear to keep you warm and comfortable.

1. A Winter Weather Tent

Your winter tent has to put up with harsher weather than your summer one, including and especially winter snowstorms. Generally, you’ll want to choose a four-season tent with stronger poles, heavier fabric, and fully encasing rain flys. You may also want some extra room in your winter tent so that there is enough space for all of your winter gear, which tends to be bulkier as well.

2. Sleeping Essentials

When winter camping, it is especially important to stay warm while you sleep. It starts with a well-insulated sleeping bag that is properly rated for the temperatures you may experience. An insulated sleeping bag liner can help keep you even warmer, and a very warm and high-quality liner may even allow you to use your summer sleeping bag and save you the cost of buying a brand new one. Don’t forget about a properly insulated sleeping pad that will provide not just a cushioned spot to sleep, but that will prevent the cold and snowy ground from sapping your body heat.

3. Good Base Layers

Staying warm and comfortable in the winter means layering up, the most important layer is the moisture-wicking base layer. For the clothing that will be closest to your body, choose performance fabrics like merino wool or synthetic polyester that will trap body heat and draw moisture away to keep you warm and dry.

4. Accessorize for Extra Warmth

Keep the warmth in your body where it belongs by making sure you bring along and wear accessories like a hat, gloves, and scarf. These will stop heat from escaping through your head, neck, and hands when you spend time outside and even when you sleep. A baclava may be a good idea if you plan to go on a hike or have a long trek to your campsite. Don’t forget a pair of thick cotton socks to keep your toes warm as well.

5. Bottle Insulator

Staying hydrated is just as important in the winter as in the summer but, in the winter, there is a greater chance your water might freeze. Drinking very cold water can also lower your body temperature. The simple solution is to have a good bottle insulator that keeps your water from freezing or getting too cold.

6. Liquid Fuel Stove

Staying warm during winter camping is much easier when you can make hot meals and hot drinks on a camping stove. It is best to have a stove that uses liquid fuel, as you will be able to maintain the pressure in the fuel bottle even in cold temperatures, unlike with a canister stove.

Get geared up for your winter camping trip and you’ll be sure to have a good time despite the snow and colder temperatures. In fact, you’ll be able to enjoy the winter wonderland to its fullest.
