Choosing the Best Tax Software to File Your Return

Filing your own tax return can be a good idea if your return is relatively simple and straightforward, as it can help you save money. It might seem overwhelming at first, but certified tax software will take a lot of stress out of the process. In order to choose the best software for your needs, you should consider factors like the features offered, the user interface, and the platforms it is available on. Here is a look at five of the most popular options in Canada and how they compare.

TurboTax

TurboTax is a very easy-to-use program available for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS. The free version is completely free to use, no matter your income, but it does not allow you to import information from your previous filing years. For this feature, you have to pay a competitive fee of $19.99. The paid version also makes it easier to find tax credits and deductions to maximize your return. TurboTax offers a user-friendly interface and excellent support as well.

Wealthsimple Tax

Wealthsimple Tax, formerly known as SimpleTax, is another completely free software (with an option to pay what you want in order to support the program) available for Windows, Mac, and iOS. Unfortunately, it does not have an Android version. For a free program, it offers some of the most features, including an RRSP calculator and partial auto-fill returns. Wealthsimple Tax can handle even more complicated returns and has a very sleek and user-friendly interface.

UFile

UFile is a straightforward and feature-full tax filing program that offers just about everything you could be looking for. However, though compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems, it does not have mobile versions. The free version also has some stipulations and is only available for students, first-time filers, those with incomes only from T4 slips, and those with incomes of less than $20,000, but the paid version is only $19.95 and well worth it.

H&R Block

H&R Block offers online tax return software for every platform, letting you file on your preferred device. You can choose from a free version with many helpful features, a $19.99 version with customized tax tips and unlimited support, and even a $29.99 version with audit protection. A simple and logical interface walks you through the filing process at a manageable pace to keep things going smoothly.

StudioTax

Finally, StudioTax is one of the most established tax programs in Canada, and it is still widely used despite many new options coming to the scene. Though it lacks the bells and whistles of other programs, the paid version is only $15 and is available across all platforms. One of the best features of StudioTax is that you can download it locally and work on your tax return without an internet connection, which may be useful if you are travelling.

Reduce the stress of tax season by choosing certified software that allows you to file your taxes quickly and easily from the comfort of home. Pick the right one for you by considering which software works on your preferred platform and offers the features you need at your preferred price.
