How To Drive Safe
A/C & Heating Service is Not to be Ignored

Many different things can cause the air conditioning or the heater in your vehicle to stop working. There could be an issue with the fan that pushes the cool or hot air into your cabin, there could be a leak in the cooling system, or a bad thermostat, for example. There could also be a problem with the heater core which is a smaller version of a radiator, but instead of being used to cool the engine, it uses the heat from the engine (coolant) to warm the car’s interior.

You spend a lot of time in your vehicle, and logically you should want to make it as comfortable as possible. Your car’s climate control system should keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. In extreme weather conditions, your car’s climate control system can also contribute to your safety as a driver by keeping you comfortable and alert. Don’t embark on one of life’s great journeys or depart for that road trip without first making sure both your air conditioning system and heating system are functioning properly in your vehicle.

If you turn on your air conditioning and don’t feel any cool air or try to use your defroster and don’t feel heat, obviously you have an issue. You may also notice odd smells or noises coming from your vehicle’s A/C system, and these are other signs you need immediate heating and A/C repair.

Are Issues With Heating and AC Common?

When it comes to newer vehicles, there is rarely a problem with the heater or the AC unless it is a manufacturing defect. Most vehicles that are new will not have any issues with these systems until they’ve gone 60,000 miles or more. With older vehicles, it is much more common to have issues with the systems and they’ll need to be serviced more regularly.

Don’t Open Your Hood to Strangers

Understand how your car or truck’s heating system works, and what is “normal” for the vehicle, so it will be easier to determine when there is an issue that needs attention. Read the vehicle’s owner’s manual or consult a trained sales or service employee from your dealership to ensure you understand the proper use of the system and how all of the controls work.

Some vehicles may have more advanced heating and cooling options that are a lot different than those in previous vehicles that you’ve owned. A certified dealership technician can professionally diagnose any problems with your air conditioning and heating units and inform you of any necessary repairs.

What Could Prevent Issues With the Heating and the AC?

The best way to make sure that your vehicle’s heating and air conditioning systems continue to work properly is by ensuring proper maintenance. Consulting a technician that has been trained and certified by your vehicle’s manufacturer and has experience with the heating and cooling system in your specific vehicle is essential. Not all vehicles are built the same.

You want to be as comfortable as possible when you are driving, and a huge part of that is having air conditioning and heating. It is important to take good care of the vehicle and to keep up with scheduled maintenance tasks so the heating and cooling system lasts for many years to come.
