A Look at Canada’s Newest Streaming Services

In addition to popular services like Netflix, Crave, and CBS All Access, you can now choose to subscribe to Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus, and a wide selection of Prime Video Channels. Roku has also introduced new live linear programming to all of its devices. The challenge is to decide which service is the best choice for you. Here is an overview of each one to help you choose.

Prime Video Channels

Prime Video Channels are a recently introduced feature on Prime Video that allows members to add specific channels to their account which give access to content from premium third-party networks. This includes STARZ, Super Channel, Sundance Now, OUTtv, Nickelodeon, Smithsonian Channel, and more. Certain channels also come with a “watch live” feature that allows you to stream content at the same time it is being broadcast on TV. You have the option to cancel or add new channels to your account at any time.

An Amazon Prime membership in Canada costs $7.99 a month or $79 a year and provides access to Prime Video. Subscribers can then choose to add additional channels to their account, which range in price from just $3.99 to $9.99 depending on content.

Disney Plus

If you’ve been wondering why Disney movies have been disappearing from Netflix, it’s because of Disney Plus. Disney’s very own streaming service, Disney Plus carries television shows and films from all of the media giant’s main studios, including Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Pixar, and National Geographic. You’ll also find select films from 20th Century Fox and Fox Searchlight Pictures, as well as original films and shows created for the new service.

Disney Plus is available for a monthly fee of $8.99 or a yearly fee of $89.99.

Apple TV Plus

Apple TV Plus represents a bold move for the company, which is now focusing just as much on streaming services as on hardware and software. There are currently eight original series available on the platform, including The Morning Show with Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, and Steve Carell, and See with Jason Momoa. Much more original content is planned for release over the coming months.

Apple TV Plus is available for a fee of just $5.99 a month in Canada, and you can start with a seven-day free trial. Anyone who purchases a new Mac, Apple TV, iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad will receive a free year’s subscription.

Roku Live Linear Channels

Looking for an alternative to paying a subscription fee? With a one-time purchase of a Roku streaming device, you will have access to 14 free live linear channels from a wide range of publishers. Channels include Law & Crime, Adventure Sports Network, Food52, TMZ, FilmRise Classic TV, Now This, and more.

There are three different Roku streaming devices to choose from: the Roku Express which delivers HD streaming for $39.99, the Roku Premiere which delivers 4K HDR video for $49.99, and the $89.99 Roku Streaming Stick for portable 4K HDR streaming,

With so many subscription streaming services delivering on-demand movies and TV as well as live programming, it’s becoming easier than ever to cut the cord with cable. Even Canadians who still have cable are supplementing with a service or two that carries shows and movies they like to watch.
