Nissan to Bring Safety Tech to Top-Selling Models (video)

Every time you drive a Nissan confidence comes along for the ride. Nissan Intelligent Safety Shield Technologies comprises a comprehensive approach to safety that guides the engineering and development of every vehicle we make. It’s our way of looking out for you and yours by monitoring, responding and protecting to help keep you and your passengers safe.

MONITOR
Smart technologies are designed to help monitor conditions, from a system that helps ensure you’re travelling on properly inflated tires, to an available system that monitors your steering input patterns, and alerts you that you may need a break.

RESPOND
Whether you need to hit the brakes hard or manoeuvre around an unexpected obstacle, these standard technologies help you respond to a potentially harmful situation.

PROTECT
When a collision is unavoidable, Nissan’s Zone Body construction helps absorb the impact while the advanced seatbelt and airbag systems help protect passengers.

“Safety Shield 360 combines six advanced systems to give models like Altima and Rogue a class-leading package of technologies that can improve safety and the overall driving experience for Nissan owners”, said Denis Le Vot, chairman, Nissan North America.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), cross traffic alert reduces crashes by 22 per cent; the combination of rearview cameras and sensors reduces crashes by 42 per cent, and adding rear emergency braking reduces backing crashes by 78 per cent compared with vehicles with none of these features.

Nissan Safety Shield 360, which includes front, side and rear sensing technologies – will first be introduced on SV and SL grades of the upcoming 2019 Rogue, 2019 Qashqai and the all-new 2019 Altima.

FRONT

  • Intelligent Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection – uses forward-facing radar and camera technology to track vehicles and crossing pedestrians, can give audible and visual warnings and apply braking to help avoid or reduce the severity of frontal collisions
  • Lane Departure Warning – alerts the driver of drifting from the lane with a visual warning and audible or haptic signals
  • High Beam Assist – automatically switches to low beam headlights when it detects a vehicle ahead and turns the high beams back on when needed

SIDE

  • Blind Spot Warning – helps spot vehicles in driver’s blind spot areas
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert – can warn the driver about detected approaching vehicles when reversing out of a parking spot

REAR

  • Rear Intelligent Emergency Braking – helps the driver detect stationary objects when backing up and, if necessary, applies the brakes to help avoid a collision

Another key component of Nissan Intelligent Mobility is ProPILOT Assist, which will be available on the all-new 2019 Altima and 2019 Qashqai. ProPILOT Assist eases driver workload by reducing the amount of driver acceleration, steering and braking input under certain driving conditions, during single-lane highway driving. ProPILOT Assist is the foundation for automated vehicles of the future, helping drivers stay centred in the lane, navigate stop-and-go traffic, maintain a set vehicle speed and maintain a set distance to the vehicle ahead. Currently, Nissan offers ProPILOT Assist on the 2018 Rogue and the all-electric 2018 LEAF.
