Famous Canadian Filming Locations You’ve Seen on Screen

Though not many of the movies and TV shows we watch are set in Canada, moviegoing Canadians are used to seeing locations they recognize on the big and small screens.

Home to picturesque historic sites, modern cityscapes, and breathtaking landscapes, Canada provides an array of ideal filming backdrops. Here is a look at some of the most famous Canadian filming locations and the movies and TV shows that have been shot there.

Toronto and Vancouver

Toronto and Vancouver come only after Los Angeles, New York, and London as the most filmed cities in the world. Both have been used as stand-ins for American cities for decades.

Vancouver is often portrayed in movies and on TV as Seattle, as both cities are located in similar geographical settings and have comparable skylines. Most notably, Vancouver played Seattle in the movies Fifty Shades of Grey and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Other Washington-set films have also been shot in Vancouver, including the Twilight series and Five Easy Pieces. CW shows The Flash and Supergirl are filmed at various locations throughout Vancouver as well.

Toronto has likewise had numerous chances to show the world its unique locales. Among the most popular locations in Toronto to have made it on screen include Yonge Street, City Hall, Lower Bay Station, the Distillery District, and the Financial District. Just some of the many movies you may have seen that were filmed completely or partially in Toronto are Suicide Squad, The Incredible Hulk, and Pacific Rim. The TV show Suits is also filmed in Toronto.

University of British Columbia

Though located in Vancouver, the University of British Columbia is one of the most-filmed locations in the world in its own right. Over 90 films have been shot on the campus grounds, including X-Men 2, She’s the Man, The Butterfly Effect, Fantastic Four, and Age of Adaline, just to name a few. The TV shows Supernatural, Smallville, Once Upon A Time, and The X-Files have all been filmed at the University of British Columbia as well.

University of Toronto

The University of Toronto is another frequent leading star in major motion pictures, often standing in for an American Ivy League school. The campus was used as Harvard in Good Will Hunting, Yale in The Skulls, and Princeton in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. More recently, it has also been popular as the backdrop for sci-fi movies, including Resident Evil: Afterlife and the Robocop and Total Recall remakes.

Riverview Hospital, Coquitlam, British Columbia

A mental health facility that was originally opened in 1913, Riverview Hospital and its historic grounds have amassed an impressive list of film credits over the years. Now under reconstruction, many of its buildings used to lie abandoned and provided an atmospheric backdrop for films like Saw, Deadpool 2, Watchmen, Halloween: Resurrection, and Grave Encounters. Riverview Hospital also stands in for the home of the “Sisters of Quiet Mercy” on Riverdale.

Kananaskis Country, Alberta

The beautiful wilderness of Alberta’s Kananaskis Country is a big-screen darling. Many major Hollywood blockbusters have been filmed out here, with the most well-known being The Revenant and Brokeback Mountain. Kananaskis Country was also among the filming locations for the films Snow Dogs, War For The Planet of the Apes, The Bourne Legacy, and Inception.

Next time you head to the movies or watch your favourite show, keep your eyes peeled. You might just spot a Canadian landmark or catch a Canadian city masquerading as another major metropolis.
