Whether it’s movie night or you are looking for a new show to binge-watch, it can be fun to try something you haven’t heard of before. With Netflix Canada’s extensive catalogue, you can be sure there is always an underrated title to check out. Next time, skip the browsing and consider one of these eight options.

Dark

Part mystery, thriller, horror, and science fiction, Dark is a German show that you might not want to watch in the dark. It takes place in a small town where children suddenly go missing, but the story quickly delves into much deeper mysteries. Dark debuted back in 2017 and now has three seasons available for viewing.

Tigertail (2020)

Tigertail is the directorial debut of Alan Yang, a co-creator of Master of None and writer on Parks and Recreation. The film is an immigrant drama based in part on Yang’s personal history. It follows a Taiwanese factory worker, inspired by his father, who moves to America. Tigertail is an emotional look at the struggles involved in immigrant life.

1922 (2017)

1922 had a relatively quiet Netflix release, especially considering that it is based on a Stephen King novella. It is a slow-burn thriller with supernatural elements that will rope you in during the very first minute. At its core, however, 1922 is a simple story set in pre-Depression America about a man who committed an unforgivable crime.

The Big Flower Fight

Enter the fast-paced world of flower arranging in this British competition show modelled after The Great British Baking Show. Marvel at the skill of the florists, garden designers, and sculptors as they compete to create the most beautiful floral installations. If you want something feel-good and easy-to-watch, then you can’t go wrong with The Big Flower Fight.

Warrior (2011)

Warrior lost big at the box office when it was first released, even though it did gain critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination. Since then, the sports drama starring Tom Hardy and Nick Nolte has also gained a cult following. Themes of family, redemption, and trauma drive this action-packed and emotional film.

6 Balloons (2018)

6 Balloons, a film by Marja-Lewis Ryan, takes a poignant and intimate look at addiction. Over the course of one night, it follows a young woman as she searches for a detox center for her brother. The film features standout performances from Dave Franco and Abbi Jacobson, two actors better known for their comedic roles.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (2019)

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is the directorial debut of Chiwetel Ejiofor, Oscar nominee for 12 Years A Slave. It follows 13-year-old William Kamkwamba, who learns to fix things around his village in Malawi by reading books from his school library. Inspired by what he has read, Kamkwamba builds a wind turbine to save his village from starvation.

Santa Clarita Diet

Though it only had a three-season run, the Netflix Original Santa Clarita Diet is a zombie horror comedy that will have you hooked. It stars Timothy Olyphant and Drew Barrymore as a regular suburban couple whose lives are turned upside down. The show is quirky, funny, and, most importantly, incredibly enjoyable.

Sometimes, you just want to sit back and relax with something good to watch. They may not be as popular as other Netflix movies and shows, but these hidden gems are sure to entertain.
