Best Canadian Shows on Netflix Canada

Sometimes, you just need to unwind by sitting back and streaming a good show. If you’ve got a Netflix Canada account, then why not use it to watch and support some quality Canadian content at the same time? Here are five fantastic recommendations to start with.

Schitt’s Creek

Schitt’s Creek is a sitcom that follows a formerly wealthy family who must move to a small town they once purchased after losing their fortune. The process of adjusting to small-town life with no money leads to some hilarious trials and tribulations for the two parents and their adult son and daughter. Schitt’s Creek premiered in 2015 and is currently airing its sixth and final season. You can find the first five seasons in full on Netflix Canada. The series has deservedly earned a host of accolades over its run, including 18 Canadian Screen Awards.

Kim’s Convenience

Another family-focused sitcom, Kim’s Convenience chronicles the Korean-Canadian Kin family as they operate a convenience store in Toronto’s Moss Park neighbourhood. The family consists of the parents, “Appa” and “Umma,” their daughter Janet, and their sun Jung. On air since 2016, the series is currently in its fourth season, and the first three seasons are available on Netflix Canada. Kim’s Convenience has earned numerous Canadian Screen Awards and nominations.

Anne with an E

Anne with an E is a drama based on the 1908 Lucy Maud Montgomery novel Anne of Green Gables. It tells the story of a young orphan girl living in 19th-century Prince Edward Island. Unfortunately, the series was cancelled after its third season, but Anne with an E won many Canadian Screen Awards over its relatively short run. It is definitely a Canadian series you want to check out. The first two seasons are available on Netflix Canada, and Canadians can stream the final season on CBC.

Murdoch Mysteries

Murdoch Mysteries is a beloved Canadian drama series that just finished its 13th season (with the first 12 all available on Netflix Canada. The titular character, William Murdoch, is a detective who uses advanced forensic techniques to solve crime in Toronto around the turn of the 20th century. Murdoch Mysteries was well-received upon its first season and continues to enjoy a dedicated audience to this day. It has earned critical acclaim, as well as many award show nominations and wins.

Trailer Park Boys

Trailer Park Boys is an iconic Canadian mockumentary series about three petty felons who live in a trailer park. It originally aired on Showtime for seven seasons, ending in 2007. In 2013, the show’s three main actors purchased the rights to the series and partnered with Netflix to begin producing more episodes. There are currently 12 seasons of Trailer Park Boys available on Netflix Canada, as well as an animated series and several movies and specials. A new season is also in the works.
