COVID-19 Hiking Tips and Etiquette

Always a favourite summer activity, hiking has become even more popular this summer as people seek to stay active while staying safe. Thankfully, there is a very low chance of virus transmission outdoors, especially if you are mindful of how you interact with others and with the environment. Just follow these simple tips as well as any specific rules in your jurisdiction for hiking during COVID-19.

Maintain Physical Distancing

The best way to keep yourself and others safe when hiking this summer is to stay at least two meters away from anyone who is not part of your group. This means moving aside to allow others to pass and waiting to pass until there is enough space on the trail. Remember to hike along the right side of the path and stay in single file if the trail is busy. You should also yield to other hikers at narrow spots like stairs and bridges and avoid congregating at junction points.

While maintaining physical distancing can take a bit of extra effort, it can also encourage you to slow down and really take in the trail.

Follow One-Way Trail Signs

Many popular hiking trails in communities throughout the country have been turned into one-way circuits to allow for social distancing. This makes for easier passing and less congestion. It is important to be aware of whether you are on a one-way trail and to follow the posted signs to ensure you are walking in the correct direction.

Avoid Touching Shared Surfaces

Though you aren’t going to come across too many shared surfaces on a typical hike, some trails do have handrails, picnic tables, and benches that you should do your best to avoid touching. Of course, utilizing handrails may be necessary to safely traverse tricky sections, so it is a good idea to bring along some hand sanitizer that you can use immediately after.

Consider Going During Less Busy Times

Hiking trails are usually most crowded on weekend afternoons. You can avoid a lot of people if you choose to go at off-peak times like weekday mornings or in the late afternoon. If you do head out later in the day, just make sure you are aware of when the sun is setting and get back well before it is dark outside.

Check Out Some Lesser-Known Trails

Another way to avoid crowds is to look up some trails that fewer people know about. Spend this

summer exploring the hidden gems that tend to be overshadowed by the more popular hikes in your area. It will be easier to maintain proper social distancing, and you’ll get the chance to see more of your own backyard at the same time.

Hiking is a great way to relieve stress and stay healthy while following social distancing recommendations and reducing the spread of COVID-19. As long as people are considerate of each other, it is possible for everyone to enjoy the trail and spend some more time outdoors.
