Essential Equipment for a Fun Camping Trip

Escaping into nature can be a fantastic adventure–or a wet, miserable, and mosquito-bitten time. Make the most out of your trip by coming prepared. Though not exhaustive, here is a list of ten basic equipment essentials you need to bring with you.

1. Tent

You won’t last long camping without a proper tent. Make sure your tent is rainproof and large enough to accommodate everyone who will be staying inside. Some extra elbow room is always good in case you have to huddle up inside when inclement weather hits.

2. Sleeping bag

A good sleeping bag is equally important for camping comfort and ensuring you get a restful night’s sleep. When choosing a sleeping bag, check that it is rated for the temperature you need it to handle. You also need a sleeping pad or mattress to provide a layer of cushioning and insulation between you and the ground.

3. Water

Before you set off, be sure to take stock of the water situation at the campsite. Will potable water be available, or do you have to supply your own? You need to have water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and putting out the campfire.

4. Clothing

Because camping requires packing light, you should be smart about the clothes you bring. Check the forecast and plan your clothes accordingly. Layered outfits are the most efficient, as you can dress up or down for the conditions. A lightweight and waterproof raincoat is always important to pack as well.

5. Campfire essentials

Fire provides a source of heat and a way to cook, so bring everything you require to start one. Check whether your campsite provides firewood or if you need to pick some up nearby. Other campfire essentials you should pack include matches, lighters, firestarter, and kindling.

6. First-aid kit

Minor scrapes, cuts, stings, and similar small ailments are all part of the camping experience, so it’s best to come prepared with a first-aid kit. You can pick up a pre-assembled kit or simply put together your own with bandaids, ointments, pain killers, and other first-aid essentials.

7. Light

You’ll likely need to move around camp after the sun sets, and, for that, you’ll need a source of light. The campfire provides light within a short distance, but headlamps or lanterns are necessary for going anywhere outside of its small radius.

8. Cooking tools

Good eating at camp will make the experience much more enjoyable for everyone. While you can roast some food over the fire, a propane camp stove offers a lot more versatility. Make sure you also bring all of the necessary serveware and utensils as well as a cooler to store your food.

9. Insect Repellent

Swarming mosquitoes and other bugs can really put a damper on a camping trip. Insect repellant and solutions like mosquito candles will help keep them at bay and let you enjoy your time without constantly swatting mosquitoes away.

10. Chairs

Nothing gets older faster than sitting on the cold, hard ground. Camping chairs are worth the investment and the storage space in your vehicle for a soft, dry, and comfortable place to sit.

Camping is all about roughing it a little, but you don’t want to forgo your basic comforts. Pack smart, and you’ll have such a good time that you’ll instantly be planning your next trip.
