Distancing on the Slopes
How Canadian Ski Resorts Are Reopening

Ski resorts might not be expecting international travellers this year, but plenty of Canadians are eager to get out of the house and into some fresh powder. It’s also looking like a great winter for a successful season in many parts of the country. Mount Norquay in Banff, for example, had its earliest ever opening this year. Wherever you decide to go, here is what you need to know.

Pandemic Precautions to Expect During Your Visit

Though ski resorts are open, you can expect some significant changes designed to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Resorts across the country have worked together to come up with consistent measures and guidelines. They also had help from resorts in New Zealand and Australia, which already completed their full winter seasons. The measures they introduced will be similar to what you have likely seen in restaurants and businesses.

Masks will, of course, be mandatory inside buildings, and you may be asked to wear one when in the chairlift lineup. Make sure you follow any social distancing markings on the floor while in line and note any hand-sanitizing stations while indoors. Resorts are also eliminating the singles line, which would normally allow single riders to take the chairlift with other groups. They are asking for groups that arrived together to please ride together.

Dining facilities at ski resorts have seen a major change as well. Restaurants now have more grab-and-go food options to limit the time spent waiting in lines. There will also be more spread-out spaces around the resort where you can take your food to eat or where you can sit when you need a break. Some resorts are even setting up large heated tents to expand their capacity.

When you are getting ready for a ski trip, it’s a great idea to hop online and take a look at any other measures and precautions your resort will have in place.

What You Can Do to Stay Safe and Ski Responsibly

In addition to following the resort guidelines, there are a few other steps you can take to help maintain social distancing. First, purchase your ticket or your season pass online to avoid standing in line when you arrive. If you can, try to choose less busy days and off-peak hours to avoid the crowds as well. Though there will certainly be fewer tourists, resorts do expect an uptick in locals.

When at the resort, try to plan your visits to the restaurant during less busy times and look for a less crowded place to eat as well. Even better, consider taking your food back to your vehicle and enjoying it there. Resorts are also encouraging guests to use their cars as a locker room if they can. But don’t worry, all of the facilities you might need will be available as well.

There has never been a better time to support your favourite local ski resort or find ways to spend some time out of the house. If you are excited to hit the slopes, then don’t hesitate. Grab your skiing gear and get ready for some winter fun.
