How to Set Up a Cozy Fall Patio

As the temperatures drop and the daylight shortens, you don’t necessarily have to stop enjoying your patio just yet. In fact, there’s nothing quite like transforming your patio into an oasis that will allow you to soak in the outdoors for as long as possible. If you’re looking to bask in the glory of Canadian autumns, here’s your go-to guide for settling up a cozy fall patio this year.

1. Think Layers

Layers, layers, and more layers are the secret to a cozy outdoor space. Think blankets, cushions, and rugs. Just as you’d layer up to head outside, do the same for your patio. Opt for thick, warm, and preferably waterproof or water-resistant fabrics. Faux fur throws, wool blankets, and thick cushions can make outdoor seating inviting even as the temperatures drop. A weather-resistant outdoor rug can add warmth underfoot and help define the space.

2. Add Some Warm Lighting

The charm of fall evenings is undeniably the warm golden hues. Mimic this natural ambiance by adding warm lighting to your patio as well. Fairy lights, lanterns, or string lights can be draped overhead or around the railing. Not only are they pretty to look at, but they also add warmth to the surroundings. For an extra touch of autumn, consider placing candles inside carved pumpkins or holders. Just don’t leave them unsupervised, or opt for flameless varieties instead!

3. Turn Up the Heat

Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long for the chill of Canadian fall evenings to set in. Investing in a patio heater or a fire pit can extend your patio time into late fall, and both are great options for warmth and ambiance. Whether you’re sharing stories around a fire pit or sipping hot chocolate beneath a heater, it’s all about creating memories in a snug setting.

4. Add Some Autumnal Accents

When we think of fall, our minds instantly drift to shades of orange, red, yellow, and brown, so why not integrate these colours into your patio decor? Throw pillows, flowerpots, and tablecloths in these hues can evoke the feel of the season. You can even gather pinecones, dried leaves, and pumpkins to create an outdoor centrepiece.

5. Keep Some Green with Evergreens

While many plants start to hibernate in the fall, evergreens stay, well, ever-green. Introducing plants like juniper, spruce, or pine not only adds colour to your patio but also gives it a fresh piney aroma. They’re hardy and can withstand the Canadian cold, making them perfect patio companions.

6. Warm Up with Hot Brews

What’s more comforting than a hot drink when there’s a nip in the air? If you’re entertaining or just want to enjoy your patio with your family, then brew up some cozy seasonal beverages like apple cider, pumpkin spice lattes, or mulled wine. Not only will you have something delicious to sip on, but it will help keep the chill at bay.

Fall doesn’t have to mean bidding adieu to the outdoors. With a few tweaks and additions, (and some woolly socks and a mug of something warm) you can transform your patio into a snug retreat that you’ll never want to leave.
