Seven Must-Attend Summer Music Festivals Across Canada

After a long winter, Canadians are ready for summer music festival season to begin. This year, the hotly anticipated festivals and their stellar line-ups are not going to disappoint.

While it’s hard to narrow down the numerous music festivals that take place every summer from coast to coast, we’ve put together a list to help you decide which festivals you should prioritize. You can’t attend all of Canada’s summer music festivals at once, but you should certainly try to attend one or more of the following.

– Dreams Music Festival (July 7-8)

Dreams Music Festival is Toronto’s premier electronic dance music event. This year’s line-up includes Above & Beyond, Dillstradamus, Steve Angello, and DVBBS. Dreams Music Festival will run for two days, feature three stages where you can catch your favourite performers, and take place under the summer sky at Downtown Toronto’s RBC Echo Beach.

– Evolve Music and Awareness Festival (July 13-16)

If you’re passionate about both music and sustainable living, then make sure you check out Evolve Festival in Moncton, New Brunswick. Aptly dubbed “Canada’s greenest festival,” Evolve is a four-day event which promotes environmental awareness. There will be no shortage of fantastic music either, with a line-up featuring Too Many Zoos, Arrested Development, Sam Roberts Band, and Xavier Rudd.

– Dawson City Music Festival (July 21-23)

The Yukon’s Dawson City Music Festival has been a well-loved music and cultural event since 1979. This year, you’ll be able to catch Quinton Blair, Zachary Lucky, Duchess Says, Ukes of Hazard, and many more talented performers at the Dawson City Music Festival. Make sure you find some time to explore and take in the stunning beauty of the Yukon while you’re there.

– Calgary Folk Music Festival (Jul 27-30)

The genre-defying Calgary Folk Music Festival is a staple of Calgary’s summer scene, regularly attracting over 50,000 visitors during its four-day showing at Prince’s Island Park. Artists from Canada and from around the globe will be performing on Calgary Folk Fest’s 11 stages this year, including Barenaked Ladies, City and Colour, Blue Rodeo, Basia Bulat, Betty Bonifassi, and Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq.

– WayHome Music & Arts Festival (July 28-30)

WayHome Music & Arts Festival takes place at Burl’s Creek Event Grounds in Ontario and provides a custom-designed, camping festival experience. On top of being a celebration of music, WayHome also features art installations and night time visual spectacles. Make sure you attend WayHome if you want to see Imagine Dragons, Frank Ocean, Flume, Tegan and Sara, Solange, and many more amazing artists.

– Edmonton Folk Music Festival (August 10-13)

Like the Calgary Folk Festival, the Edmonton Folk Music Festival is one of the world’s leading folk music events. Performers hail from a variety of genres, including blues, gospel, roots, and bluegrass. This year, you can look forward to creative workshops, delicious food vendors, and six different stages with performances by Valerie June, City and Colour, Martyn Joseph, Tift Merritt, and many more talented artists.

– Shambhala (August 11-14)

Shambhala is easily one of the staples of Canadian summer music festivals. Since its beginnings in 1998, Shambhala has grown into a festival that Canadians all over the country hope to one day attend. Shambhala takes place at the Salmo River Ranch in the beautiful West Kootenays of British Columbia, and will this year hosts acts such as Illenium, Destructo, Adventure Club, Herobust, Justin Martin, and Slushii.

There’s nothing like listening to your favourite artists (or discovering some new ones) under the long summer sun. Take your pick from the festivals above, because you’re sure to have a blast at any of them.
