How to Stop Hitting Snooze in the Morning

Everyone knows the joy of snoozing the alarm and getting a few more minutes of precious sleep. However, snoozing can also turn into a bad and very difficult-to-break habit.

Do you find yourself unable to get out of bed every day without hitting snooze over and over again, and does this then lead to you having to rush to get out of the door on time? If your snoozing habits have gone too far, then it’s time to reign them back in. Here are five tips that you can use to stop hitting snooze and wake up on your first alarm.

1) Wake up at the same time every morning

Forcing your body to get used to waking up at the same time every morning (yes, even on weekends!) can help you stop feeling like you need to get those last few minutes of sleep. Once your body develops a more natural rhythm, you may even find yourself waking up a few minutes before your alarm clock is set to go off.

2) Try to get enough sleep

If you already do try to wake up at the same time every morning but you’re still having trouble with snoozing, then it might be because you simply are not getting enough sleep. For example, you might feel that five or six hours of sleep a night is enough for you but, if you just can’t get up in the morning, then your body is clearly telling you that it needs more.

3) Place your alarm out of easy reach

One of the simplest ways to trick yourself out of bed is to set your alarm clock or your phone well out of reach before going to sleep at night. This way, you’ll have to actually stand up and walk over to turn it off. Once you’re up, you’ll have to fight the urge to crawl back into bed, but it’ll still be easier to fend off sleep than if you had stayed in bed in the first place.

4) Drink water before bed

Another way to trick yourself is to drink enough water before bed so that you will have to get up to use the washroom once your alarm goes off the first time. You don’t want to drink so much that you’ll wake up in the middle of the night, but just enough that it won’t be comfortable to keep snoozing your alarm. A couple of glasses should do the trick.

5) Ask yourself if snoozing is really worth it

Finally, you should ask yourself whether snoozing your alarm really is as enjoyable as you think it is. Whatever extra amount of sleep you manage to get in the few minutes before your alarm goes off again is likely to be disjointed and won’t help you feel more awake during the day. It also eats up the time you could be using to have a nice, long shower, eat a good breakfast, and pick out the perfect outfit.

There’s nothing wrong with snoozing once in a while, especially if you’ve got the time to spare. However, waking up at the time you wanted to wake up more often will lead to much more relaxed mornings. Do yourself a favour and break the snoozing habit, and you’ll be glad you did.
