Northern Talent
Eight Celebrities You Might Not Have Known Are Canadian

Canadians tend to be very proud of other Canucks who have made it big in the entertainment industry, and we always love finding new celebrities that we can claim as our own.

Most people are aware that celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Seth Rogan, and Drake are Canadian, but there might be a few northern stars who have managed to slip under your radar. Here are eight celebrities that you might not have known are Canadian.

1) Ryan Reynolds

One of Hollywood’s favourite leading male stars at the moment, Ryan Reynolds hails from Vancouver, British Columbia, where he attended and later dropped out of Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Reynolds got his acting start on a Canadian teen soap named Hillside that aired from 1991 to 1993.

2) Nathan Fillion

Nathan Fillion, the beloved star of Castle and the sadly short-lived Firefly, lived in Edmonton, Alberta until he was 23 years old, where he worked on numerous film, television, and theatre productions. Upon moving to New York City in 1994, Fillion landed the role of Joey Buchanan on the popular soap opera One Life to Live.

3) Eric McCormack

Prior to his role as Will on Will and Grace, Eric McCormack lived in Toronto, Ontario, where he acted in stage productions. McCormack made his television debut in 1986 in the Canadian movie The Boys from Syracuse. He eventually moved to Los Angeles and, in 1991, landed his first US television role on the crime series Top Cop.

4) Michael Cera

Michael Cera of Superbad and Arrested Development fame was born in Brampton, Ontario. Cera started as a child actor on the Canadian series I Was a Sixth Grade Alien. After landing leading roles in both Superbad and Juno in 2007, Cera went on to amass an impressive filmography for his young age.

5) Ellen Page

Speaking of Juno, Cera’s co-star in that movie, Ellen Page, also happens to be a Canadian. Page was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and you may have seen her playing young Treena on Trailer Park Boys. After several more small Canadian television roles, Page gained critical acclaim for her role in the 2005 film Hard Candy.

6) James Cameron

James Cameron, the groundbreaking director of Titanic, The Terminator, Alien, and Avatar, was born in Kapuskasing, Ontario and grew up in Chippawa, Ontario. The future filmmaker and his family moved to Los Angeles when he was 17 years old. While working as a truck driver in 1977, Cameron saw the first Star Wars movie. It inspired him to quit his job and pursue a career in the movie industry.

7) Carly Rae Jepsen

The “Call Me Maybe” singer who burst onto the stage in 2012 was born and raised in Mission, British Columbia. Always a student of the craft, Jepsen attended the Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria, British Columbia to study musical theatre. In 2007, she auditioned and made it on to the fifth season of Canadian Idol. She ended up placing third in the competition.

8) Pamela Anderson

Though everyone’s favourite blond bombshell moved to Los Angeles in 1989, Pamela Anderson was born in Ladysmith, British Columbia on July 1st, 1967 – Canada’s 100th anniversary. She attended school in Comox, British Columbia, and later worked as a fitness instructor in Vancouver. Anderson decided to pursue her modelling career after appearing on the cover of Playboy, and the rest is history.

As you can see, Canadians are a talented bunch. These and many other celebrities ensure that our great country is well-represented in the TV shows we watch, the songs we listen to, and the blockbuster films that we flock to see.
