Connecting Through Cinema
Whistler Film Festival 2017

Whistler may be best known for its stellar slopes, but since 2001, it has also hosted an annual gathering of filmmakers and film fans at the ever-growing Whistler Film Festival.

The Whistler Film Festival is hosted by the Whistler Film Festival Society, a charitable organization which seeks to both celebrate and advance the art of film. The Whistler Film Festival Society holds numerous events throughout the year with the goal of connecting Canadian cinephiles and promoting Canadian screen talent. The Whistler Film Festival is their largest event.

Typically scheduled for the first weekend in December, this year’s Whistler Film Festival will begin on November 29th and end on December 3rd. Over the course of these five days, the festival will be screening up to 90 fresh and exciting films from filmmakers across Canada and abroad. As the Whistler Film Festival is a competitive film festival, the films will be vying for $32,000 in commissions and $122,000 in prizes, amounting to $154,500 in total awards.

The Whistler Film Festival recognizes cinematic excellence by giving out 12 awards in seven different juried sections, plus one audience award. The juries which decide on these awards are comprised of diverse individuals from the international film community. Presented on the last day of the festival, the following awards are bestowed on films from the documentary, dramatic, and short form categories:

  • Audience Award
  • Borsos Award for Best Canadian Feature Film
  • Best Director of a Borsos Film
  • Best Screenplay of a Borsos Film
  • Best Cinematography in a Borsos Film
  • Best Performance in a Borsos Film
  • World Documentary Award
  • Mountain Culture Award
  • Canadian ShortWork Award
  • International ShortWork Award
  • ShortWork Award for Best Screenplay
  • MIPPIA Short Film Award
  • BC Student Shortwork Competition

On top of catching screenings of the films that pique their interest, attendees also have the chance to check out tributes, celebrations, and Canadian film industry initiatives such as the Whistler Summit. Burgeoning filmmakers can also take advantage of the Whistler Film Festival’s Talent Programs for marketing, networking, and project development opportunities.

The Whistler Film Festival was created to help up-and-coming filmmakers have their voices heard in the world of independent film and to support the growing film industry in British Columbia. In less than two decades, the festival has met and grown beyond all of its goals. It is now a highly respected international film festival circuit event that has screened over 1,017 films and presented 112 awards. The Whistler Film Festival Society has grown from having an operating budget of $30,000 to about $1.5 million.

Tickets to the Whistler Film Festival are available online. You can also purchase festival tickets at the Whistler Box Office in-person during the event. Individual film tickets will likewise be available for purchase online or at theatres. Anyone who loves films or who just wants to immerse themselves in culture while surrounded by the beautiful Pacific Ranges should definitely plan a trip to the Whistler Film Festival.
