Beat the Cold
Top Winter Travel Destinations Around the World

Looking for a break from the cold weather? Many Canadians like to escape the chill of the winter and spend some time in a warmer locale over the months of January and February.

The following six destinations are a top choice among winter travellers for a variety of different reasons. Whether you are looking to relax on the beach, go hiking in the wilderness, or enjoy the local shops, one of these popular vacation spots is sure to fit the bill.

Las Vegas

If you’ve ever wanted to visit Las Vegas but aren’t a fan of blistering desert heat and overcrowding, then consider going in the winter. While Las Vegas doesn’t have a true “low” tourist season, it does tend to tone down a little after New Year’s and pick back up again in spring. Daytime highs during January and February hover at a comfortable 10°C to 15°C – fantastic temperatures for putting on a light coat and visiting the Red Rock Canyon.

Peru

Peru is absolutely brimming with tourists during the spring, summer, and early fall. Visiting Peru in the winter time, which is considered to be the low season, means lower prices on everything from hotel accommodations to tours. You’ll rarely find yourself standing in line and you’ll be better able to enjoy Peru’s beautiful white sand beaches.

Thailand

January and February fall right during peak tourist season in Thailand but braving the crowds is absolutely worth it. During this time of year, you’ll get to experience the perfect weather of the dry season before the unbearable spring heat moves in. The days are sunny, the beaches are beautiful, and there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy.

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is likewise in the throes of its tourist season in January and February but the weather is also at its optimum. The dry, warm days are often punctuated by pleasantly cooling winds that make it even more comfortable to spend time outside under the sun. It’s surf season as well, so consider signing up for some surfing lessons during your visit.

Hawaii

There’s almost no better escape from a cold Canadian winter than Hawaii. Even during its coldest months, the daily highs still tend to reach over 25°C – the ideal temperature to enjoy yourself at the beach or in Volcanoes National Park without overheating. Hawaii does experience more rain during the winter time but showers are usually short-lived.

Costa Rica

January is the first month of Costa Rica’s dry season, making it the ideal time to come out and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities. Lowland highs regularly hit 35°C and the mountains enjoy temperatures of 24°C to 29°C. February is perhaps an even better, though slightly busier, time to visit. With almost no rain, you’ll truly be able to soak up the sun.

The Canadian winter is beautiful in its own right, but you should never turn down the chance for some extra sun and fun. With so many amazing destinations to check out and attractive vacation packages offered by airlines this time of year, it’s time to start packing your bags.
