2018 Ford Mustang GT
Introducing Performance Pack Level 2

Following some serious revisions for the 2018 model year, the Ford Mustang is stepping up its performance game with an accessory pack designed for weekend racers who need more grip and improved handling.

“This was more of our team’s dream Mustang GT, we didn’t have external benchmarks,” explained Carl Widmann, Mustang chief program engineer.

The Performance Pack Level 2 comes with all the bits from the standard Performance Pack including Brembo brakes with adjusted ABS tuning, unique stability control tuning, a retuned steering rack, a k-brace, a larger radiator and a Torsen rear differential with 3:73 gearing. The Level 2 Pack also includes a number of new parts that should further improve the Mustang’s handling.

The front and rear stabilizer bars included are now 12 and 67 percent stiffer, respectively. Springs are stiffer by 20 percent up front and twelve percent in the rear. Make note however, that the Level 2 package is only available on Mustangs equipped with a manual transmission.

Real performance junkies will notice that cars with the Level 2 Package sit a menacing half-inch closer to the ground. Other hints include black detailing on the front splitter and a redesigned rear spoiler, now in “all-business” black. Fun fact: the revised front splitter was actually designed by a NASA aerodynamics specialist. So, yes, the new performance pack includes rocket science.

The aforementioned NASA rocket scientist spent extensive time with the new Mustang in the wind tunnel searching for downforce. A front splitter design very much like the old Boss 302 Laguna Seca wore was developed into something new that provides an additional 24 pounds of downforce at 80 mph, which helps keep the car planted through high-speed corners. The new rear spoiler works in unison with the front splitter, balancing the overall downforce and providing additional grip, giving the combination a total of nearly 60 pounds of additional downforce at 80 mph.

The task of gripping the track while you carve through its corners has also been assigned to a new, massive set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires measuring 305/30/R19. These new “track shoes” are a serious upgrade and 1.5 inches wider than tires found on Level 1 Mustangs. Unique ten-spoke Level 2 rims are another visually exciting ingredient and the already-available Recaro seats can also be ordered with the package.

The chassis has been completely retuned specifically to handle the additional grip and much wider tires. Every component is stiffer and stronger, from the springs to the stabilizer bars. The standard brakes and powertrain remain the same but with this upgrade, you’ll be able to better harness all 460 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque.

Road & Track reports that testing the car at Grattan Raceway in Michigan, the Level 2 package shaved an impressive 3.5 seconds from the Lap time of the Level 1 package.

So… ready to go racing? The Performance Pack Level 2 might just be the edge you need to take home the trophy.
