8 Augmented Reality Games for iOS and Android to Try

AR games work by superimposing a computer-generated world on top of the real world, getting you moving and interacting with your environment. For those who are interested in AR games but not sure where to start, here are some of the best and most unique AR apps available for both Android and iOS.

1. Pokemon GO

Though it wasn’t the first AR game, Niantic’s Pokemon GO certainly drew attention to the format. Three years in and the game is still going strong, allowing players to explore the world and catch Pokemon they come across. A plethora of new features have been introduced since launch, attracting many new and old players again.

2. Ingress Prime

Also from Niantic, Ingress Prime is an upgraded version of Ingress, which itself formed the framework for Pokemon GO. It is a highly worthwhile game in its own right, with the plot revolving around two competing factions (the Enlightened and the Resistance) fighting for control over virtual territories in king-of-the-hill style.

3. WallaMe

WallaMe is a unique social app that turns the world into your canvas. Take pictures of the world around you and use the in-app tools to leave text, images, or drawings attached to the location. Others who have the app as well can then come along and see your messages and works of art.

4. dARk: Subject One

Not for the faint of heart, dARk: Subject One is a short adventure horror story that takes place inside of your home. Players step through a portal into a dark, parallel universe in search of a lost colleague, exploring the unknown and deciphering clues along the way.

5. Knightfall AR

Knightfall AR is a battle strategy game that places the battlefield down on a real-world flat surface, allowing you to view the battlefield from multiple angles to plan your strategy. Players take the role of the Knights Templar as they defend the Holy Grail from an invading army.

6. Just a Line

An AR offering from Google, Just a Line is as fun as it is simple. First, you use your smartphone to scan the area around you. Then, the app allows you to draw whatever your heart desires in the 3D augmented space. You can even capture your doodle on video to share with friends!

7. ARise

If you love puzzles, then you will love this AR take on a puzzle game. Your task is to guide a small knight through a maze, helping him avoid obstacles along the way. The AR aspect allows you to explore and interact with the maze in order to come up with the best strategy.

8. Army of Robots

Army of Robots shows that AR is a fantastic medium for a first-person shooter game. Use your smartphone to scan the area for enemy robots, fending them off as they try to invade your home. Make sure you have plenty of space to test your aim and dodge enemy projectiles!

With a powerful gaming device right in your pocket, it’s easy to download and play the newest and coolest games available in the App and Play stores. AR games seem here to stay and are only getting better, so it’s time to try some out for yourself.
