Fall Foliage
Best Places in Canada to Watch the Leaves Change Colour

Though summer may be coming to a close, you can still have plenty of fun outdoors. The cooler days of fall provide the perfect opportunity to throw on a sweater and enjoy the changing colours, especially at the following locales.

The Laurentian Mountains, Quebec
Quebec is famous for fall colour viewing opportunities, and nowhere will you be able to take in more astounding sites than in the Laurentian Mountains. These mountains offer something to do every season of the year. In the fall, the birch trees and maples that cover the mountainsides take on an array of warm tones that slowly grow darker as the days get shorter. Take a stroll through the crunchy leaves amidst the charming towns and serene lakes.

The Cabot Trail, Nova Scotia
Driving the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island is a truly breathtaking experience, especially in the fall. The 300-km scenic road, which offers views of the coast and the countryside, becomes saturated with autumn hues. Colour-seekers will be rewarded as they make their way through the quaint fishing communities that lie along the trail. The first two weeks of October are a particularly wonderful time to come and take in the changing of the seasons.

Banff National Park, Alberta
While the evergreens that dominate most of Banff National Park may not change colour, the numerous birch trees scattered amongst them put on a beautiful fall show. Sub-alpine larch, a unique type of conifer that sheds its needles in the winter, also take on a beautiful golden hue. Some of the best places to take in the sights are at iconic Moraine Lake and at the top of the Sulphur Mountain Gondola just outside of Banff Town.

Muskoka, Ontario
The cottage paradise of Muskoka isn’t solely a summertime getaway. On the contrary, the vivid fall foliage adds a rich warmth to all of the activities you can still take part in as the weather starts to cool down. Take in the fiery red maples as you drive the winding, scenic roads to various waterfalls and Great Lakes viewpoints. Better yet, ditch the car and enjoy the view of the changing leaves from one of the boat, ATV, or helicopter tours offered in the area.

Vancouver Island, British Columbia
The West Coast of Canada can be just as beautiful as the East when it comes to fall colours, and Vancouver Island provides perhaps the most picturesque foliage-viewing opportunities in British Columbia. The months of September and October paint the island in a rich array of golds, red, and greens. The very best views are available along the western side of the island, in the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and around the fishing town of Tofino.

Confederation Trail, Prince Edward Island
The Confederation Trail is a multi-use, 410-km trail that spans the length of Prince Edward Island, in the footsteps of an abandoned railway. Trekking or hiking the trail during different seasons is always a unique experience. In the fall, you’ll get to enjoy an array of beautiful colours ranging from deep red to peach gold, with evergreens dotted throughout. In many places, the trail is flanked by trees on both sides.

If you’re looking for the perfect fall destination and haven’t quite yet made up your mind about where to go, then the chance to see some stunning fall foliage should definitely factor into your decision. Any of these six fantastic spots would make a great choice.
