Essentials to Bring for a Day Hike

Hiking is a fantastic activity that almost anyone can do as long as they come well prepared. With just a few essentials, you’ll be all set to hit the trail for the day. 

Because you can pick your own trail and set your own pace, you’re almost always guaranteed to have a fun and relaxing time while hiking. However, things can quickly take a turn if you didn’t bring the right gear. Don’t let anything sour your day hike by making sure you bring along: 

Water 

Never underestimate the importance of having enough water. If your hike ends up being longer than expected or if the temperature spikes above forecasted levels, then you very easily risk becoming dehydrated if you didn’t bring enough water with you. Pack as much as you think you’ll need, and then some. It might be heavy at first, but the load will lighten as you go. 

Proper hiking shoes 

No one bails from a hike earlier than the person who didn’t bring the proper footwear! Shoes such as flip-flops and flats have no place on the trail, even if the trail is relatively easy and flat. For easy trails you’ll be able to get away with a good pair of comfortable and supportive runners, but you’ll want proper hiking shoes for anything more demanding. 

Proper clothing 

The proper clothing to wear on a hike will change according to the weather, but, generally, you’ll want to wear layers so that you can layer up or layer down as the temperature and sunlight fluctuates. Always have a hat with you, and make sure you check the forecast before leaving so that you know if you should bring rain gear.

Food 

Nothing takes the enjoyment out of a hike like being hungry. Just as with water, you’ll want to bring enough food to last you for the day, and then some. You never know if you’re going to be out longer than expected, and you want to keep your energy levels up with meals and snacks. Make sure you always clean up after yourself after stopping to eat! 

A first aid kit 

Having some basic first aid items is essential in case anyone sustains an injury out on the trail. Make sure you pack supplies such as bandages, antiseptic wipes, and painkillers. You can find small, easy-to-carry first aid kits in any outdoor store and most drug stores. 

A comfortable backpack 

In order to hold all of your food, water, first aid items, and extra clothing, you’re going to need a quality, comfortable backpack. Women may want to look into backpacks designed specifically for them, as the shoulder straps are not as broad and will stay on more comfortably. 

Trekking poles 

Trekking poles can be incredibly helpful while hiking long trails, and you may even prefer to use them on short ones as well. They can take a lot of the pressure off your knees and thighs as you ascend and descend. They also provide extra balance on slippery trails and when crossing streams. 

If you’re headed for a day hike, whether in the deep wilderness or somewhere closer to home, don’t leave home without these essentials. Both for your safety and for your enjoyment, make sure you always hike prepared.
